Rjmakmom
Recipe for caramel!!! A friend recently forwarded this to me and I tried it today. Best. Caramel. Ever. And now that it is apple season, a cheap, easy way to get more apples into the kids. You buy a can of sweetened condensed milk and remove the paper wrapper. Place unopened can into a crockpot and add enough eater to completely submerged can. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours. Remove still unopened can, and place in fridge for 2 hours. Open can and enjoy!!

theYoungerMrsWarde
how does that turn into caramel?? I am intriqued, but confused?? :iagree: I saw caramel being made on Masterchef and I thought they made it from sugar? I remember there being a deal about how they stirred it and it made it grainy and they weren't suppose to do that? (1st or 2nd season.)
HSinNH
It is actually called dulce de leche. It gets it's taste from the sugar in the sweetened condensed milk caramelizing. If you do this, please make sure that the can is always covered with water or else it will explode!

pfamilygal
We do that and make mini pies/tarts in muffin top tins. I make a cinnamon graham cracker crust in the bottom of the each muffin top spot and then spoon the dulce de leche over it. MMM! We're supposed to make "gold rush bars" this week for our Gold Rush Unit. Maybe we could sub that since the regular recipe calls for coconut and I'm allergic. Thanks for the reminder!
