Is it okay to use a 20 year old Saxon math?

First edition texts are being called called "easier" by some people, but trying to read between the lines of conversations I've heard, I think they are narrower rather than easier. But in some way, there are missing topics, that are included in later editions.

If you use 1st edition, stick with 1st edition. Just don't switch back and forth. If you want a wider or more rigorous scope and sequence don't use 1st edition.

I also think calculators are used less in 1st edition.

I'm no expert, but some of the "experts" I have listed to, sound like they might not understand exactly what they are talking about.

Yes!

The only difference is that the sequence used to be that if a student did well in Math 76, he did Alg. ½, then Alg. 1; if he struggled through Math 76, he did Math 87, then Alg. 1. The Alg. ½/Math 87 sequence is reversed now.

Otherwise, I see no reason not to use them.

There are always "gaps." Don't worry about it. :)
