lynn
It is 87 which is only 10 years old and Algebra 1/2. Is there anything done differently now when it comes to algebra? Will my son have any gaps?
Hunter
First edition texts are being called called "easier" by some people, but trying to read between the lines of conversations I've heard, I think they are narrower rather than easier. But in some way, there are missing topics, that are included in later editions. If you use 1st edition, stick with 1st edition. Just don't switch back and forth. If you want a wider or more rigorous scope and sequence don't use 1st edition. I also think calculators are used less in 1st edition. I'm no expert, but some of the "experts" I have listed to, sound like they might not understand exactly what they are talking about.
Reflections
I think that there is a thread about gaps, the idea being that everyone has gaps in their education. IMO, I wouldn't worry too much, 20 years ago was only the late 80s. and there are lots of people who were educated with Saxon then and have turned out fine.:001_smile:
Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
:iagree: on what Hunter said...if you use it, use the older books through-out. Can you look at the contents page and see what is missing if anything, you can then teach the missing parts on your own. FWIW I am using a 50+ yr old curriculum with my dd for Math. Ellie
Yes! The only difference is that the sequence used to be that if a student did well in Math 76, he did Alg. ½, then Alg. 1; if he struggled through Math 76, he did Math 87, then Alg. 1. The Alg. ½/Math 87 sequence is reversed now. Otherwise, I see no reason not to use them. There are always "gaps." Don't worry about it. :)
Delighted3
We are using the older editions, because that is what I bought for my older kids and we have just been passing them down as the younger kids get to them. They have been fine for my kids, even the 2 that have graduated. Joy
