tv over the mantle

Recommended Posts

DH is handy so this may affect your outcome :) but we used the mantle as what he calls the "cable trough".

Then he ran the cables down the side of the fireplace and made a hole at the bottom for them to come out. We're going to buy a nice bookcase with a cabinet in the bottom part to hide the equipment.

Took a while and he had to buy lots of HDMI cable. It wasn't cheap.

Our tv sits on the mantle. Our Blue Ray player and satellite box sit next to it. They stuck out quite a bit so dh painted a board to stick under them for extra stability. We have a surge protector with a really long cord sitting on the mantle for all the plugs. It runs from the plug, behind a bookcase and up to the mantle. We also have our Wii box, modem and telephone on the mantle.

It doesn't look great but our main reason for doing it this way was to keep things out of reach of the little guys, especially when they were younger. It also gives us more space in our very small living room.

This. Dh also ran the sound system. Although dh never used the term "cable trough." That made me laugh.

Our plan was to have a recessed cabinet built with a fabric door that was flush to the wall beside the fireplace. The cords were going to run inside the wall from the TV to the cabinet.

Another idea is to research going wireless. I have seen that done before also.

If you have a large TV store in your area, you can talk to the installers before you build and get some ideas. Anything that can be put in ahead of time will be a huge help later.

Or, look at 'Street of Dreams' style houses. They always have clever solutions for electronics.
