shanvan
a website? Have you used a class? An online tutorial? Just used a template somewhere? Talk to me like I am completely computer illiterate (which is not too far from the truth).
whiskeywife
I used to have a website when I had a family child care business. I used a free website that lets you make your own website. They had different templates to choose from and you could download your own photos if you wanted to. The only thing I had to pay for was the annual fee for the domain name. I think that was around $15 a year. I honestly cannot remember the name but if you do a google search for free website maker there are plenty to choose from. Ellie
I don't know about that, but I would encourage your ds to learn basic page layout and design, as well, since those "rules" are good for Internet as well as print. There's a "Dummy" book for that. :)
Candid
Does he want to create a website to learn to create one or does he have a purpose? I need to create one for a high school baseball team, but I don't want to learn to program one for a living; my path will be different from someone who wants to make one for a living. TrixieB
My ISP gives me website space. A few (well, more than a few, maybe 8?) years ago I bought Idiot's Guide to Creating a Web Page and Teach Yourself HTML in 24 Hours and set up a web page for our family. I am sure there are more up-to-date books available now, and fancier things a person could put on a web page, or templates that could just be filled in, but I learned quite a bit and had fun making a relatively basic web page "from scratch". Yes, I should have specified. I told you I'm barely computer literate. He has a purpose. It is for a group of kids across the state with the same interest. He would like to have a forum, space for articles, links, competition dates, results, probably other things too. He doesn't necessarily want to learn programing. Okay, you've gotten one resource for a canned website place, They use templates and you just type your information into place, put in your photos and it is easy as pie. That is what I would suggest at first. However, some of what you list is going to be both more complicated and more expensive. He'll need to search for forum software which might end up costing him some money and he may need a specialized host that will host the forum. For instance he can get the software used here: https://www.vbulletin.com/index.php That's not cheap and you'll also need to pay a web host. However, he may find by searching that there are free or cheaper forum software out there. Also, as an alternative, he might consider using a simple Yahoo! group or a Facebook page. He might also consider a wiki. Here are some links: https://www.wikispaces.com/ http://educationalwikis.wikispaces.com/Classroom+Wikis He might also consider a blog or a website using Word Press software. Blogs can be gotten for free either at wordpress or blogspot. I like both. The Wordpress software makes it so you can have standard web pages and a blog. I like this book for learning how to set all that up: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470877014/ref=wms_ohs_product BUT I'd start with a blog for free and only move to the software which will cost you some hosting $ when he needs it. Thank you! I'm going to discuss it with him and have him preview the free ideas you suggest. I wondered if a blog or yahoo group might be best to start. I certainly can't afford to pour money into something at this point. He needs to see if he can interest others first. I appreciate your suggestions. Maura in NY
You could try Weebly: http://www.weebly.com It's very easy, and as a homeschooler, you can get the free education upgrade. http://education.weebly.com/
krisperry
This is a great book. It will teach him what he needs to know. Even greater, it has assignments (with answers) so it could easily serve as a textbook if you are wanting to give credit. http://www.amazon.com/Head-First-HTML-CSS-XHTML/dp/059610197X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344123154&sr=8-1&keywords=xhtml
