Central OR Vacation: What are your "must see/must do" attractions?

Recommended Posts

We are headed to Central OR (Staying in Redmond, just north of Bend) next month. We already have some things in mind:

Smith Rock NP

Bonneville Fish Hatchery

searching for thunder eggs near Fossil

day trip to Crater Lake

Cascade Lakes Nat'l Scenic Byway (inc. Mt. Bachelor)

Newberry Nat'l Volcanic Monument and Lava Lands

McKenzie Pass/Santiam Pass byway (inc. Dee Wright Observatory)

numerous waterfalls

Any suggestions from those who have BTDT would be appreciated.

You should visit Sisters, about 25-30 minutes from Redmond. Cute little town, with lots of little craft and quilt shops and a nice little park. Just the other side of Sisters is the Metolius River, maybe 10-15 minutes from Sisters. Along the Metolius is Camp Sherman, and a lovely little fish hatchery with an observation pond (a great place from which to picnic and hike the river), and the headwaters of the Metolius.

It would make a good day trip.

The High Desert Museum is very near Lava Lands, and is a fun place to visit.

Definitely check out the John Day Fossil Beds, if you have any interest in fossils. The Painted Hills Unit is amazing. The Clarno Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds is about 20 miles from Fossil. We spent four days in Fossil, and it was excellent. I would also highly recommend fossil hunting behind Wheeler High School in Fossil. We were there for five minutes and had a pocketful of excellent fossils (which is legal, happily enough).

Up 97, just north of Madras is a cool ghost town, Shaniko.

You are going to Bonneville, are you traveling i-84? If you are I can recommend a nice museum in the Dalles, and just east of the Dalles is the Maryhill Museum and grounds (on the Washington side). We like to stop at the subway in Oregon and then have a picnic at Maryhill. Gorgeous views, and peacocks roaming the garden.

Central Oregon has some great river rafting. We went last summer when dd was 4. There are some nice stretches of river that are thrilling, but not to crazy. Good family sections.

Cove Palisades on Lake Billy Chinook is good for a swimming day

Another good day trip could be John Day and the Fossil Beds. We love the Painted Hills and Blue Basin. Blue Basin is like stepping onto a Star Trek set.

How long will you be there?
