linders
DS8 (soon to be 9) has done WWE 1 and 2 an is almost done with 3. He has detested them all, truly hated them. He can do both the narrations and dictations just fine, but the format doesn't work for him in a way he cannot articulate. (Note: Older DS liked WWE fine.) This is a bright kid who is ahead in every subject and types his own pretty good 4-6 sentence narrations from SOTW. He writes stories about his stuffed animals in his journal. It isn't that he can't write. I was inclined to ditch any formal writing program next year, but he's a checklist kind of kid. He has asked to do IEW (big bro takes an IEW class) but I think that might be more than he needs. Maybe. What might you recommend that might would suit his need to "do something"? Other than learning some basic outlining (which I could teach without a program) I really don't see that he "needs" something. Thank you! Farrar
What if you had a routine for writing instead of a program? Would that satisfy him? Something like Monday journal writing, Tuesday SOTW narration, Wednesday science narration, etc. And maybe a bigger writing project every month? Reflections
You might try Writing Strands - he writes to the student and has a bit of humour. I would start with level 4. My dd really likes the easy going nature of the author.
SilverMoon
My similar 8yo boy just started Classical Writing Aesop and adores it. It looks similar to the higher CW courses his older siblings are doing, which makes him feel quite big. Some other courses like Classical Writing are Writing Tales and Classical Composition. ChristusG
DD7 (second grade) is using Winning With Writing and I like it. She does well with it. She doesn't love writing but she doesn't hate it either.
Sweet Home Alabama
My youngest ds has always used WWE and will finish book 3 the end of this year (3rd grade). He has learned more than he realizes, but there have been too many tears. He doesn't want to do book 4. I have Write with the Best Vol.1 to try next year in 4th grade. It uses lit excerpts and a checklist. It has the "flavor" of WWS that my middle child is working through, but is recommended for 3rd-6th grades. (Volume 2 is written for 6th-12th grades.) Here are some links: (Note: CBD has the newest version.) http://www.edudps.com/WWTB.html http://cathyduffyreviews.com/grammar-composition/write-with-the-best.htm http://www.christianbook.com/modeling-writing-world-literature-volume-1/jill-dixon/9780980030211/pd/530211 http://www.edudps.com/WRITE-WITH-THE-BEST-Vol-1.pdf http://www.edudps.com/WRITE-WITH-THE-BEST-Vol-2.pdf Edited April 13, 2012 by Sweet Home Alabama
linders
I'm going to look at all your recommendations. It sounds like there are several that might fit the bill! Linders
MicheleinMN
Maybe he is ready for WWS (Writing with Style)? I'm not sure if the preview is still available, but you might look for it at PHP. Just thinking it might be the change your ds needs. :001_smile: I'm not 100% in love with WWE, but really like the looks of WWS. HTH
fiddle
Why not take a look at the IEW materials and see if there is something that might be a good fit? If your oldest is doing IEW and you are familiar with the method, you could try something like a theme based (like Ancients to go with your history). If you're not familiar with the method, you could give the Student Intensive A a try with the DVDs that pretty much do the teaching;) If your kid is a checklist kind of kid, IEW might be a great fit. I'm doing the Student Intensive B with my 6th grader, but my 3rd grader (same age as your kiddo) is tagging along and I'm using the A reinforcement pages to just get her introduced to outlining, writing coherent paragraphs, etc. It also makes her feel "advanced" :D Good luck in your decision! deeinfl
I would give All Things Fun and Fascinating or the Fables one a try. It is scripted and if you run into anything that you don't understand you can ask on the yahoo forums. :) My fifth grader completed the book this year. I thought he didn't love it, but tolerated it, yet when I asked him if he wanted to do something else this year, he said no, that he wanted to continue with IEW. I secretly think it makes him feel like he's doing the same grown up work his older brother is doing. I have been very happy with his progress! HTH Just a "heads-up": the initial 10 week sample of WWS is deceptively easy. The difficulty starts ramping up at about week 12 and I've heard that there is another jump at about week 20 (I haven't read that far ahead yet). I bought it for my DD this semester based on the preview with the idea of going at a slower pace. So far it's been going okay but I really think that I'm going to need to shelve it after week 11 and just have her practice those skills for a while with selections of my choosing.
