NittanyJen
Okay, with LL2 coming up still for my older, and my younger about to finish Prima Latina and start BBLL1, I finally lost it last night and said no more single sided printing! Yet I like the way she suggests organizing the notebook by page type. I printed chapter 15 last night duplexed, by making a list by page type and printing in batches, so all the lessons printed double-sided, then all the exercises, then all the history, and so on. Then I went back through and wrote down the schedule (ie, do lesson 15.1 and Ex 15.1 ; history pages xx--yy; etc). Now I can go ahead and print on half the paper, still have him organize his notebook properly, and know in what order to do things. If this is just too obsessive for anybody else, that's okay :). But if anybody else wants the roadmap, holler and i'll post it as I go back through chapter by chapter so nobody else has to reinvent the wheel. It's also easier for him to have a binder half the size!

Ooooh! Post it! I was thinking of doing the same thing but haven't found the time (or gumption). :)
NittanyJen
Okay, here is the printing scheme and MY lesson schedule to make sense of the pre-segregated double-sided printed version. I think it's fine to speed up or slow down from what I wrote here, btw. It's in the order originally presented in the book. NB: Remember to reset your printer to single sided to print flash cards! NB: One thing I realize I did NOT do is to flag pages from the history section that are "consumable." I realize now that this would have been useful for people using this curriculum for multiple kids within a household (legal according to this publisher)-- saves a lot of paper and ink if you only have to reprint the consumable pages!! But at least from this you know you don't have to reprint the lesson pages, vocab and flash cards, and that much is easy to sort out! ======================== Chapter 1 Lessons: pp 1,2,3,4,12,13,18,19 Exercises: pp 8,14,20 History: pp 9,15,16,21,23,24 WordPower: pp 10,11,17 Vocabulary: pp 5,6 Flash Cards: pp 7,25 ** Remember to print these single-sided! NittanyJen
The board wouldn't let me include this introduction-- post was too long :) This intro goes with the prior post! Big Book of Lively Latin I Printing and Assignment Scheme—37 weeks of assignments. The printing scheme: The lists of page numbers according to page type will allow you to print the book double-sided, to save paper, and still file the pages according to The Magistra's directions-- ie, all Lessons together, forming a little Latin grammar book, all History together, forming a history book, all Vocabulary together, etc. This printing plan, however, will quickly drive you mad, as now all the pages will be out of order in terms of their presentation in the book. To that end, I have put together Lesson plans chapter by chapter, so that you will know in what order the pages are supposed to be presented, as originally presented in the book, before we mashed them up for double-sided printing. I have bunched together lessons according to how I see them falling naturally. The course can be stretched out by unbunching assignments, reviewing often, or shortened by eliminating history. I threw in a few days here and there that are lighter than others. In my world, we all need a little break sometimes. There are also lectures and activities on the main website that are not mentioned here but may also be scheduled as desired. In my estimates for chapter completion, I “rounded up†on the assumption that school or a particular subject just doesn’t happen some days. You can also use these "extra" days to schedule activities from the website. If you do Latin every single day on this schedule, with no additional days for review or online lessons, you will finish faster than the 37 weeks estimated here. Happy Printing! *except where noted, asterisked items denote pages that must be printed in landscape mode* *sigh* I'm off to start working on LL2 . . . DS11 is getting ready to take his LL1 final this week . . . ========================

I just print them in the natural order double sided and have dc do one sheet a day, I.e., two pages on one sheet of paper. I don't try to match anything. It is minimal work for me and it makes sense. I do let them do the vocab flash cards every day. They started in February and are starting Lesson 16 this week. I like LL 1 so much for the ease of use and the independent learning that I bought LL2 online version instead of using Latin Prep 1 because I want Latin to be easy and independent until I have to teach it. In fact, I am just learning along with dc. This program is the perfect "do the next thing" type of learning.
NittanyJen
And that is a perfectly valid way to do LL. this thread is to help those who want to organize the notebook the way the author suggested; you can't do that if you print double-sided in order-- I made that mistake when we first started out :). We ended up printing single-sided, and the notebook quickly became a monster! I find this way very easy too. It takes me under two minutes to print a chapter, and with the lesson guide, I can just assign the appropriate pages each day. Then they get filed. We also end up with a great Table of Contents if he wishes to look anything up from a prior lesson. Isn't it great that the program is so flexible that different people can use it differently and still be happy?
BugsMama
Thanks for this! I'm not anywhere near the point where we will be using LL, but it's on my list down the road and I've saved your list! :-)
threedogfarm
Thank you for sharing. I have been avoiding printing this--now I have no excuse AND I get to check one more thing off my list. I really appreciate all your work.

threedogfarm
It takes me under two minutes to print a chapter, and with the lesson guide, I can just assign the appropriate pages each day. :iagree: I am printing out three sets at a time (one for me and one for each of my children) and it really does take just a couple of minutes a chapter! Here's a hint (and of course it took me one chapter of printing to think of it!): when there are multiple page numbers that are not in sequence (like the history of chapter 1: pp 9,15,16,21,23,24) you can type it in like that and the printer wil automatically print all the pages together double sided. I, of course, was printing the combinations separately (9, then 15-16, then 21, then 23-24.) and it made it very tedious not to mention wasteful (there were often single sided sheets). Most of you probably thought of that right from the beginning but unfortunately I was a little slow in coming to this realization so I thought I would mention it in case there's anyone else like me out there! Thanks again to Jen for putting this together! Please, please post book 2 when it's ready! You are saving a lot of trees by doing this (not to mention a lot of time for homeschooling moms)! NittanyJen
It's been a while, but my recent acquisition of a comb binder has inspired me to get moving and work on Lively Latin 2! I am double-sided printing these now (Book 1 for DS9 and Book 2 for DS12) and I am discarding the 3-ring binders, which seem to be scattering pages hither and yon! I am binding each 4-chapter testing segment into a single booklet, and when printed double-sided, these books are fitting nicely in a 3/4" comb, and don't look at all intimidating (I have not yet bound chapters 5-8 of Book 2; I just printed them today). For covers I printed a cute cover on card stock and laminated them myself. Cheap cheap cheap! I marked the start of each section (vocabulary, exercises, history, etc) with a hard plastic sticky tag to make navigation a snap. In the beginning of each book, I am including the "Handy Dandy chant sheet" found in the introduction, and a Syllabus that lists just the lesson order, so it is easy to see what to do next. I also, in the second book in each series, included all of the vocabulary sheets to date. I have not spotted any errors yet; if you do, please let me know so I can edit the doc and fix it! NittanyJen
Here is a sample of the syllabus I am printing and placing in the front of each booklet (appropriate for that booklet, of course!) to help my kiddos and I stay on track. You can easily adjust your pacing by doing fewer exercises per day, or remembering to schedule in days to play on the online lessons. My older son sometimes is tempted to do more exercises in a day, but I don't let him. Yes, he's smart enough to do it, as he's quite bright, but I find that if you take time to let something gel in your brain overnight before doing another practice exercise on it, it tends to stick in your long-term memory much better. This was the method behind the madness in my pacing plan here. I have the same philosophy regarding including the history. Sometimes I wonder what all this history has to do with learning Latin, when we already study history so intensively elsewhere. I have included it, and have two thoughts in favor of it. First, in the second book, there is a lot my son is going to like-- details about seige warfare and such. Second, those pauses to consider the history, yet staying connected to the Lively Latin program, in many of which I chose to schedule one of the English (Word Power) exercises, also give the brain a break in which to digest the material, sort, and organize it, so as to retain it and understand it better. Your mileage (and philosophy) may vary. Finally, note that I'm just a WTM forum user, and have no connection to the publisher or author of Lively Latin. I have a degree in linguistics, but no special claim to fame in Latin learning. These are just my thoughts on the matter, and how I've scheduled it, in case anybody finds any of this useful. --Jen Lively Latin 2 Syllabus Chapters 1-4 Chapter 1 (10 lessons/2 weeks) 1. warneral
Jen, it is a year later but I just wanted to thank you for all of the work you put into this! It is helping me immensely! I'm still trying to figure out how to view history as I'm thinking about putting those files on the ipad. This is just so helpful and I really appreciate it :)
warneral
I thought I would share how I figured out how to get just the history book into one complete pdf to be viewed or marked up on the ipad. I am using an ipad and PDF provider app on the ipad login into lively latin on safari open each chapter big book individually Choose the (Direct link to this file) link at the bottom of the page when the pdf opens into a browser page, choose open --> PDFprovider The chapter will open in PDF Provider. Click on the "convert" button and save as each lesson #For each lesson go to the pdf lists and click on the lesson you wish to cut pages from (so that you are only left with history pages). For each PDF file - go to the far right of the screen where each pdf has its own arrow. Click on the arrow and choose "Reorder Pages" From here you can look at Jen's list above and "x" out each page that is not a history page. I count as I go along. Then choose "save as" in upper right hand corner and save it as that lesson number_history (instead of or after flatten) Do this same thing for each of the 16 chapters Go back to the Safari Browser, open up the next lesson, open in pdf provider, etc. I've also included the introduction pages to include at the beginning. Now to merge each of the lessons (and intro) into one big PDF "history book", in PDFprovider, go to the PDFs list you just made. Check the boxes for the lessons/chapters/intro that you want to merge CHECK THEM IN THE ORDER YOU WISH THEM TO MERGE (it took me a few hours to figure that one out). Then go to the upper right hand arrow (at the top) and you choose "Merge Documents". This file can be opened up in notability and written in. I want the kids to write on paper for the lessons and exercises, but when we do history, it will be more of a "couch" activity.

warneral
One more thing - if you print out everything (double sided when possible) except history, it really doesn't use that much paper. After printing out all of the lessons and exercises, I was able to fit them in one proclick book. Then I have vocab, derivatives, and extras in a second proclick book. Little post-it tabs help separate the sections. Yes we'll be juggling two small workbooks and the ipad (for history) but at least it is nice and compact! See the pictures. The two books represent everything printed except History (which is in a pdf file on our ipads) Actually I could probably get vocab and derivatives into the lessons and exercise book and just have extras in a thin supplement book. I might try that.
warneral
Update! I did go ahead and put vocab and derivatives with lessons and exercises - all into one proclick book. They fit pretty good. Then I put "et cetera" which includes a printed out copy of the introduction, the tests and the flashcards which we will cut out when needed into a second "resources" book which is small. I think I like this setup because all of their "work" is in one book. We will rarely need to reach for the little Etcetera book
boscopup
I did 4 chapters in one book, printing out everything. It fit very well. I probably could have done 8 chapters, but 4 was fine. I, too, used the Post-It Flags. LOVE THOSE THINGS. I put the audio files into OneNote, so my son doesn't have to go login to the website to find it. I also put links to the vocab games in OneNote.
