klmama
If your dc studies an instrument and you give hs credit for that, what criteria do you use for grading?
regentrude
Since I am not professionally trained musician, I would assign a pass/fail grade myself or request my child's outside music teacher to examine and grade my student.
In The Great White North
Dd takes band at the local high school. As far as I can tell, the grades aren't based on anything at all (so maybe: attendance, being on time, bringing your instrument, etc.) There are certainly not any tests, no record of practice time, auditions, chairs, etc . Everyone dd knows got an A.
Brigid in NC
If you think your student has enough involvement with music (practice, lessons; also possibly recitals, competitions) to warrant an elective grade on the transcript, I would give an "A." If not, I would treat it as an extra-curricular activity that would go on a separate "resume" page. Lots of schools give grades for music, so I would not hesitate to give your student the same "credit" that students across the country receive. :)
Mom22ns
My kids take band at a private school. She gives grades based on playing tests and practice sheets turned in. My kids are not stars, but they get As. I appreciate having someone else give the grade! They do both take private instrument lessons as well. I just lump it all together and give the grade.
