If you're using K12 Human Odyssey for outlining

My son is in 6th grade and I have him do a single level outline of the entire chapter over the course of a week. This produces a very helpful summary. He knows how to do a more detailed outline, but it would be too time consuming. The Human Odyssey is written so that the major points can all be covered by a single level outline.

I was going to ask this too. Can you give an example of one of the outlines he does?

I have him out one section or subchapter. I follow the suggestion of SWB, and pick section of about 250 words.

 

On one day, I have him read the entire chapter and do a written narration of a specific sub-chapter. Sometimes I let him pick the section for narration. Then, on the second day, I have him do a two level outline of a section. Again, sometimes I let him pick the section for outlining, but it must be the correct length, and not the same section used for narration.

 

If I feel like his outlining has become sloppy we do it orally first.

Here is a sample of one of his outlines. Forgive me, but I am not going back to check all his spelling!

 

The Human Odyssey Book 2. Part 1. Chapter 9: Three Islamic Empires

 

I. Muslim empires were on the rise.

II. They had spread to Spain and were a little way into India.

III. Osman was the creator of the Ottoman Empire.

IV. In 1453, The Ottomans attacked Constantinople.

V. They captured Constantinople and renamed it Istanbul.

VI. The Sultan ordered that the Hagia Sophia be turned into a mosque.

VII. Suleyman was the greatest sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

VIII. People called him Suleyman the Magnificent.

IX. Suleyman made a mosque that was his greatest building, the Suleymaniye.

X. The sultan made many laws.

XI. The laws made sure crime was reported and stopped.

XII. The Safarids lived in Persia and didn't like the Ottomans.

XIII. The Safarid Shah invaded the Ottoman Empire.

XIV. Shah Abbas was a great ruler of the Safarid Empire.

XV. He copied the Ottoman ways of war.

XVI. Barber was the first ruler of the Mughals who lived in India in the 1520s.

XVII. Akbar was the third Mughal Emperor and was tolerant of many religions.

XVII. Akbar employed hundreds of painters to paint pictures for him.

XVIII. Akbar's painters learned realistic ways of painting.

XIX. Mughal architects copied the Safarid way of building.
