NikkiMarieLG
Is it just harder first grade with no new "concepts"?
Momling
It depends on the scope and sequence of any given math program or state standard or the whims of the teacher. I'd say that multiple digit addition and subtraction is a focus of the programs I've used. Also, you might get a little taste of multiplication, fractions, measurement, time, money... mandymom
Looking at Horizons 2nd grade scope and sequence (because I happen to have it here next to me), the new-to-2nd grade skills are: -addition of 4 numbers, single and double digit -addition of 4 digit numbers with carrying in all place values -thousands place value -subtraction, borrowing in the 10's place -time, five minute and one minute increments -money, $10 and $20 bills -adding, subtracting, and multiplying money -multiplication facts for 1-10 -abbreviations for months and days -map reading -area, perimeter, and volume -decimals (money) Plus, it adds to the depth of topics already introduced in 1st grade. LucyStoner
For Singapore here is their list, scroll all the way to the bottom as the list goes in order of subject areas and not strict grade order: http://www.singaporemath.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/SSUSandSTD2009.pdf
Mommy22alyns
Off the top of my head, borrowing/carrying (sorry Bill!) and introduction to multiplication would be covered.
arstephia
My dd is using Rod and Staff Math 2nd grade and is doing borrowing/carrying twice - 3 digits + 3 digits, fractions 1/2 1/3, and 1/4, money, time, measurements, etc. Most of this is new from first grade.
