Beth in SW WA
In light of the recent threads regarding math & the gifted/accelerated student... My dd8 loves her online math classes via Cybershala. I'm watching her class currently on a different computer and what I see is truly amazing. Abi is animated, engaged, asking questions, alive. This is the way algebra ought to be taught to my dd -- by a passionate, professional math lover. Rachna inspires her to think about problems differently. We do similar math during the week -- but it does not have the same energy level as the classes dd has w/ Rachna. Abi just logged out of her 'classroom' and said she absolutely loves the class. "Mom, It was so fun!" This is the best $10 I will spend today. HTH someone who is researching math options.... :) ETA: They are working through NEM. HappyCamper
I have been so tempted to sign DD9 up for cybershala. It would be so wonderful for her. She insisted on the AoPS Pre-Algebra class, and it is a huge time commitment. More than I estimated. Maybe cybershala once AoPS is over in May. If you don't mind my asking, how much time does your DD spend on cybershala, classes and homework? I admire your math choices, and am curious how you schedule it. Thanks! Dd has 2 one-hour classes per week. Rachna emails a page of homework after each class which only takes about 20 min to complete. We do math throughout the week with other materials. HTH! melmichigan
How do they determine pacing? My youngest would probably love an online class, but his pace is very fast. My goal is not to hold him to a set syllabus until he is older, just to let him run with math.

My goal is not to hold him to a set syllabus until he is older, just to let him run with math. I determine the pacing. Last year I asked Rachna to do SM ip/cwp only since I had all other math covered on my end. In Dec, Rachna started doing alg topics with Abi (which we had been doing already). I don't waste Rachna's time teaching Abi the simple stuff. I want them working on brain-stretching problems that really give Abi a thrill. :) Rachna and I email often and I observe their classes from another computer. They are working through these topics currently. 5. Beth in SW WA
Quick question for you all... I asked Rachna about her background and this was her reply: I wanted to be a teacher since my childhood. My Degrees are MSc(Math) + BSc(Math Hons) + MEd. + BEd. My college was in New Delhi , one of the very reputed college in India. under Delhi University. And got placed with the shriRam School , which is the numer day school in India from past 19 years. My Brother is BTech in computers and working with Aricent. He just started working. Here, In India , most of the population is taking admissions to Engineering degrees. As there are so many MNCs around..I think if the girls are intersted in Engineering, Math fundas are the most important. Engineering is a very good field and is gone to be a hit blast in coming years. I think they could target Engineering and lets see how scene is in like 7-8 years, there will be ample options to choose for people good in Math and Science. And also, A recent survey of the schools over world says, the kids who are 5 years old now, they are going to take 13,000 jobs which we havent even thought of. I want to apply for the Math Teacher in the schools of the US. Could you help me to see how I could start with that or about any current opening or about the procedure or like what tests we need to clear to be eligible for that. If you know anyone who could help me on this, please let me know his/her Email ID. Regards Rachna Yadav Any ideas as to where I could direct her? Thanks!
