Knitters, ball winder and swift?

Recommended Posts

Do any of you use these items?

DH bought me a boye electric ball winder for Christmas and I just don't think it works well. The ball it wound is really loose. (It is entirely possible that it was operator error!) If you use a ball winder, manual or electric, what kind is it? Do you like it?

Tell me about swifts. Do I need one? What exactly do you use them for.

If I start out with a normal skien of yarn, what is the best way to turn it into a ball of yarn???

Thanks for any advice!

This is the ball winder that I have and love - http://www.knitpicks.com/accessories/Royal_Ball_Winder__D80667.html

and this is the swift I want to get (my current one is falling apart) - http://www.paradisefibers.net/Paradise-Fibers-Super-Yarn-Swift-p/3827.htm

Using these items is the best way to turn it into a ball (or cake) of yarn, imo. Hope this helps.

I don't have a ball winder; I'm not particularly fond of them, so they become "stuff" in my mind. A swift replaces your feet, hands of a captive loved one, or dining chair to hold your hank while you wind it into a ball. I had one and enjoyed using it, but the clamp broke a few years ago and I haven't missed it enough to replace it... it's probably more necessary with a ball winder, since they spin.

I have that winder and love it. You need to make sure to have even tension as you wind. I hold the yarn in one hand as it winds.

Santa brought me a swift from this store. http://www.etsy.com/people/theknitstore?ref=ls_profile it was $20. Which is way cheaper than any other I've ever seen. I'll try it out soon, but it seems nice. I've tangled many skeins trying to wind without a swift so I'm excited to have one. Same with knitting without a ball winder. It makes it easier for me.
