Michelle in GA
I just signed my dd(8th grade) up for a Potters School world geography class. I thought it would be neat to have her literature be, "geograhy inspired" as well. For example, she could read The Good Earth to cover China. Do you all have any good ideas for other countries and other books we could use? Thanks!!!
FloridaLisa
Off the top of my head: Cry, the Beloved Country, Alan Paton. It does have some mature themes, but nothing graphic or sensational at all. Great, great story. Excellent look into the problems of white, black and segrated South Africa. Redemptive plot. HTH, Lisa
Lori D.
A couple of "worldwide travel" books (characters visit numerous countries in the book) that come to mind: - Seabird (Holling) - Hitty, Her First Hundred Years (Field) - Around the World in 80 Days (Verne) Sonlight 5 curriculum is all about Eastern Hemisphere nations, and has a lot of book titles for Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, and India. See it at: http://sonlight.com/core-5.html
Kareni
For Australia, I had my teen read Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington Garimara. It was an interesting read based on a true story. A movie, Rabbit-Proof Fence, was also made. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit-Proof_Fence_(film) for some details.
