my2boysteacher
My boys want to do a unit on Genetics. I am finding many great websites with powerpoint presentations and activities, however, I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation on books (upper elementary) or teacher resources/curricula. Thanks!
Chelli
Read some books about Mendel and Watson and Crick. These are some of the big names in the field of genes. Found this online, but I don't know what age it is for: http://www.so.wustl.edu/science_outreach/curriculum/genetics.html Found these as well: http://www.christianbook.com/kingfisher-knowledge-genes-and-dna/richard-walker/9780753456217/pd/56214?item_code=WW&netp_id=316192&event=ESRCN&view=details http://www.christianbook.com/in-your-genes-genetics-and-reproduction/steve-parker/9781410926678/pd/926678?item_code=WW&netp_id=497360&event=ESRCN&view=details

Satori
We loved this book! Great for young and older children alike. Gregor Mendel: The Friar Who Grew Peas I have a few of the Francis Balkwill books, we've enjoyed them as well. For my own reading (and maybe high school age), I also have these cartoon books on genetics. I like Gonicks' history books, and the latter author also has a guide on evolution that was recently released. NittanyJen
For a lab that is very do-able and inexpensive for the upper-elementary set, check out the Science Wiz Kit: DNA. $18 on Amazon. Do everything from extracting DNA from fruit to building a DNA molecule model, making a boy or girl karyotype, make DNA ink so you can prove you signed something, and more. http://www.amazon.com/Science-Wiz-7811-Dna-Kit/dp/B001DTD0H2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1304476590&sr=8-1 Jen

It was rated ages 9 & up & might have even been one of their internet linked books? here's the link if you want to check it out http://www.myubam.com/M3281

I did a little google, and found this Usborne book, which looks promising. Unfortunately, it's out of print, so I'd have to buy it used. (Or does the Usborne reseller have access to a new print?) Satori
Ooh, here's another one that's in print yet. I just bought the last one in stock, but it says there's more on the way. Kingfisher Knowledge: Genes and DNA Jen, that looks like a great kit, I'll have to try it out with my daughter, but she's only six so I think I'll wait a bit. She loves science and biology though, so I think she'll love it.
