kamom
Somehow both of my 5th graders know how to spell really well. We are doing CLE Language this year, which has the spelling in it. The thing is I often skip the spelling because they both know how to spell most of the words minus one or maybe two. I rarely find any misspelled words in any of their papers. What should I do for spelling? Does it matter that we are not doing anything right now? They both spell above grade level.
mnllj7
If they are doing so well in spelling, i would not do a spelling program, Lot of good reading in literature. Doing Vocabulary from the good literature, history or science. I would not waste my time. Now that is just mho. But I would maybe do latin roots or something like that It would be so interesting, and help with vocab and everything. a good one i found is Vocabulary from classical roots. hth, nanct. Crimson Wife
Spelling Power is what I use with my "natural" speller. Another option to look into is Megawords.
Amy Jo
I'm planning on CM style prepared dictation if at all possible. (DS8 is doing Spalding, but we are dabbling in dictation and he is figuring it out.) I'm using Delightful Dictation first, then this series by Rossman. Simply Charlotte Mason has a nice set too. ....
My 3rd grader seemed to learn how to spell correctly last year using some sort of osmosis...:glare: I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to use. She's been doing Megawords since August. She loves it and it's just at the right level. I give Megawords a big .
NancyNellen
I agree with skipping it all together. We work on spelling as we have trouble with words in our writing.

He's an excellent speller and we've never looked back.

Megawords was something of a flop for us because my ds was not taking in the spelling, HOWEVER, he did learn a lot about the division of words and syllables, etc. He is just not a workbook guy, so we are now doing what i hope will be our last spelling program. For a natural speller who may still need to build awareness of how words work and are put together (for future writing skills) I think Megawords is great. abbeyej
I don't do spelling with my natural spellers past a certain point. I've used Spelling Power (not all of the activities or all of the steps involved in learning words -- they don't need all of that) because the lists cover so many grade levels. But really, their spelling improves with or without instruction, and there's plenty of other stuff for us to spend time doing. :)
