Frontier Mom
I live in a subdivision and don't have a place for a garden. Last year, I planted tomatoes in pots and had great success. However, I would like to plant some other things. Any ideas and/or suggestions.
Mrs. Readsalot
salad greens, strawberries and herbs do well. Also as you noted tomatoes.
Mekanamom
Y'all are going to get tired of me... and start rolling your eyes when you see my name come up on these gardening posts... ;) Check out: http://www.earthbox.com/ and: http://www.earthboxresearch.com/ Even if you don't use the Earth Box itself, there is a list of veggies on the website that grow well in the containers. :) http://www.earthbox.com/consumer/grow.html I have only used the Earth Boxes so far for tomatoes (did well) and herbs (did great)... last year. I have 10 more boxes on order now, and will post progress on my blog for anyone interested in seeing how they do for a full sized garden this year. :D
Frontier Mom
Thanks. I'll check it out.
Adrianne
Burpee makes a few varieties especially for containers including a trellice (sp?) cucumber. I have also done spring mix lettuce in the past that works well.
lighthouseacademy
Last year I did lemon cucumber in a wine barrel- worked great... This year I am attempting snap peas in a wine barrel. I also did carrots and radishes and kohlrabi last year in the barrels. This year I have kale and cabbage going in too. Oh and onions last year and again this year. I need to do those potato garbage cans...
Susie-Knits
But this year, I am looking into the sq ft gardening and perhaps getting some boxes going. With the cost of living increases in all areas - gas, food, ... need to save where I can. We are in a neighborhood too so I will follow this post for more great ideas. Happy Planting! Robyn
I had peppers and green onions growing on my balcony last year. I want to add tomatoes this year.
Frontier Mom
At my previous home, I did square foot gardening and it was great. I thought I was really limited but these are some great suggestions. If you use a wine barrel, do you buy new dirt each year or add mulch like regular gardening? lighthouseacademy
If you use a wine barrel, do you buy new dirt each year or add mulch like regular gardening? When I find worms in the yard where I don't really need them I move them into my barrels. I also add in mulch like elsewhere in the garden. I companion plant and also crop rotate so that the soil can be rebuilt and not depleted. Does that help?
Frontier Mom
Yes, thanks. I am thinking of adding barrels each year and was adding up the dirt for them all. I was thinking I could add mulch and rotate to make the dirt "last" and be vitamin rich.
Audrey
I had peppers in pots before that did very well. Most herbs, too (basil and mint are really easy). The only way I can have rosemary is to have it in pots. It's gets so cold here in winter that it has ended up killing my attempts at naturalizing rosemary.
