colleenebeans
Okay, I somewhat know how to make regular home-made bread but I have never heard of salt-rising bread. My husbands grandmother mentioned how she remembers her grandmother making it when she was just a little girl. She hasn't had it in years and I thought I would surprise her and make some. I watched a video on youtube and became even more confused... Has anyone had this or made it before? If so, Im all :bigear:. Amira
I have a recipe for salt-raised bread I've been meaning to try. It's from a cookbook I've had good results with, so I think it would work. It's a very unusual recipe.
Susie in SWVA
I have made it. Not for quite a few years, though, since I don't particularly care for it. From what I remember, it is rather time consuming and very tricky. If it is something your Grandmother would really enjoy, I would give it a try. Think of it as culinary history. shinyhappypeople
Adding this to my list of things to try. I read the recipe and it didn't look that difficult, just time consuming. We shall see...
Susie in SWVA
I had forgotten about the strange smell. It makes you wonder if you did something wrong. Susie in SWVA

colleenebeans
Oh dear. This morning at about 3am...I finally completed my first loaf of salt rising bread. 3 starters later and a VERY long night last night, I was determined to eat some no matter how it came out! As soon as I took a bite, I realized it was missing something. SALT! I never added salt. Salt in salt-rising bread, who knew?!?!?!?! I followed the videos on youtube and did everything exactly how they wanted but I think it was missing a video or two. I looked up other recipes and they all had salt in them. Urg...I cant believe salt didnt cross my mind when I was making salt-rising bread...LOL. It doesnt matter anyway, Im NOT trying this again. Not because it literally is a 2-3 day process(provided you have a good starter) but because I cannot stand the smell of this stuff. It really does stink. Someone compared it to dirty sneakers. Let me tell you, that was being polite. So there ya go...my un-salted salt-rising bread experiement has ended. :tongue_smilie:
