The syndrome usually develops in an injured limb, such as a broken leg, or following surgery. From what I read it sounds like a horrible hideously painful thing. On the McGill pain scale, it rates as more painful than amputation of a digit. People have even tried amputation to stop the pain. All that happened is that the pain then was all concentrated on the stump.
