For the record, I had it in my head, too, for quite a while there that this was going to be an assignment that was a page or two/at least several paragraphs in length.

 

I don't see it as being AS big a deal either if it was one paragraph that took her five minutes or less, although my feelings about rough drafts and writing assignments in general remain the same :D

I have found that by creating little grading rubrics and allowing my DS to see that rubric, he follows the rules much more precisely.

 

In this instance, I don't think she fully internalized the rules, and I simply have her fix them on her next draft.

Personally as a paid writer, I think writing and editing by hand is really not the skill area I would be focusing on. Word processing-- absolutely.

A mistake is just a mistake until you do it more than once. My policy is go give grace for the first oops.

:iagree: I agree. It's a good thing it only took the child 5 minutes to correct it because if it were a longer assignment I think it would have been to much to ask, at this point. I would have just waited until the next assignment.

:iagree: I was a little surprised that it turned out to be all over something that only took 5 minutes to correct. But it's a good thing it was only a 5 minute paragraph or it would have been too much to ask of a 10 year old in my opinion.

It seems to me that the issue wasn't really about writing, but about a battle of the wills.

I think that I would put the energy towards teaching her to type so that this sort of formatting issue isn't such a big deal.

I know this is not the actual issue but I like my kids to type out their first draft so they can make format changes easily from that point on. I personally would hate writing it all out by hand multiple times (and I enjoy writing - taking notes, etc.).
