Dog experts an important question about parvo vaccines for puppies

Recommended Posts

We just found out that two puppies within two blocks of us have died of parvovirus. They were unvaccinated and apparently the virus is living in the soil in our community.

We are really worried about Lewis because our vet is quite sick and won't be into work this week. Another veterinary office covering his emergencies but not regular, preventative care stuff.

So, we found out that our local Tractor Supply Company has a single dose parvo vaccine in stock for puppies and we can purchase it according to his weight. We've administered antibiotics to a sick animal by injection before and dd has done enough IV, IM's, etc. as well as being allowed to practice on some dogs at a vet clinic therefore, we aren't too nervous about giving him the shot. We are thinking of immunizing him ourselves right after church when TSC opens up.

What should we know about side effects? Will he be sick? We're assuming it is administered intramuscularly in the loose neck muscle but we are not absolutely certain of this.

Thanks Hive,

Faith

Vaccines are NOT dosed according to weight. If they are selling something that is dosed by weight, it is NOT a vaccine.

I strongly advise you to drive somewhere to another licensed vet for a reliable vaccine. Vaccines lose potency if they are mishandled (left out of the fridge, allowed to get warm for a day, etc.), expired, etc, etc. Feed store vaccines are not your friend. Trust me.

Yes, parvo will be in the soil for a year or more everywhere those parvo pups did their business. . . keep your pup in YOUR house & yard (which HOPEFULLY the parvo pup did not enter) until he has completed his entire puppy vaccine series and you get the green light from your vet.

Also, the vaccines often sold in feed stores are combination vaccines - ie. DAPP, DLAPP, DLAPP-C, etc.

The L is for leptospirosis, a serious but localized illness. The L portion of the vaccine is MUCH more likely to cause serious and life-threatening reactions than any other component in the vaccines. ANY VACCINE WITH LEPTO SHOULD ONLY BE ADMINISTERED IN A VETERINARY HOSPITAL!

Many folks erroneously feel that 'more is better' and so many feed stores (and some vets!) sell the 7-in-1, 6-in-1, etc etc even though many/most dogs would be better served by a 4-in-1 (or even less). BE CAREFUL.

:iagree:

Many, many puppies and dogs will never have any trouble or side effects from receiving vaccines HOWEVER if your pup is one who might develop a reaction it can be life threatening in a matter of minutes and if you do not have access to a vet it can prove fatal.

Have your puppies never had vaccines? How old are they? Has the mother been vaccinated within the last year and did the puppies receive colostrum?
