German movies and Internet resources for teen?

We're looking for healthy, non-steamy, type content...

I searched old posts and found these comments from Sebastian...

We watched the movie Nordwand (Northface) a couple weeks ago. It is visually stunning and emotionally gripping. It is the mostly factual story of an attempt to climb the north face of the Eiger in the Swiss alps. The movie follows a pair of German climbers and a pair of Austrian climbers as they try to summit......

I got the movie from Netflix. It also has English subtitles.

There are some German movies in Netflix, but I can't think of many that I'd have the kids watch. Even some of the movies that were TV miniseries on German TV have scenes that I'd have to edit for the kids.

However, there is a lot available on the internet. I've found many shows in full or partial episodes through iTunes (start looking at Wissen Macht Ah and follow the suggestions). Loewenzahn is a kids show that is playable online. I have found segments from Die Sendung mit der Maus (both online and iTunes). Sesamstrasse can be harder to find, but I did just find at least one episode on the NDR site.

and saw Matroyshka's post but the resources seemed to be for younger people...

Thanks!

Joan

I'm not sure what you're looking for as far as teen content goes, but I stumbled onto a Sesamstrasse offshoot with Wolle and Pferd called Eine Mohre fuer zwei. The episode that I watched was a mostly live action about the fire department. I liked that it was a solid story that just ran, rather than a bunch of little vignettes. It also had some cute humor from the fireman. The archive has about a month's worth of episodes.

You might have your teen check this out or some of the other offerings from NDR. It doesn't seem like they have a huge archive, but you can watch the recent broadcasts. The NDR Mediathek has links to several episodes of various shows. I think the short news and interest pieces would be a good fit for your teen. They are just the sort of items that tend to show up on language exams. Plus they take a little skill to be understand (I remember the first time dh and I tried to understand a traffic report. Ugg.)

I think you could probably find similar short pieces from the other big broadcasters like ARD and MDR. I remember one of the German channels used to always have really good historical reenactment type shows.

NB: If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the ARD link, there are links to the other German (non cable) networks. Ki.Ka is the children's channel.

Thank you Sebastian!!

For those who do not go on the High School Board yet but are interested in this topic, here is the x/p thread which got more responses, and here is a YouTube link I put on it with the Germanicfolc Channel.

Is that the one you were thinking of Sebastian?

Joan

I was actually thinking of one of the channels we had on German cable that showed a lot of historical shows. The type with lots of costumed reenactments and graphics and then a voice over narration instead of dialogue so that it can be redone in several different languages.

But the You Tube channel looks really cool. We'll probably watch the Barbaren gegen Rom this week. We visited the Varusschlacht a couple times and I was always disappointed that we couldn't make one of the living history weekends. We have family in that area and I can well imagine that some of our ancestors were in the fight.

John Rabe is excellent. I'm not sure what themes you're concerned about, so I can't be sure if you'd find it appropriate. It's available on Netflix Instant Play. I think most teenagers 13 and up would find it very educational about WWII.

That does look like a historically interesting film. Thanks!

DW-TV has a learning German section, as well as you can watch the news in either English or German:

http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,,2547,00.html

This has several cartoons, the one that pops up is for preschool but if you look at the bubbles at the top you might find something interesting to your student.

They have some livestream video of their TV programs (my 2 fav. German tv channels):

We did get this and it's true the subject matter is educational.

For anyone who would be concerned about this, I'll just mention the scene where the women have to all take off their clothes and line up when the officers are trying to see if there are any men among them. Ds found it difficult, with an already difficult topic.

Wendy - thanks for the suggestion!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/german/ or if you google for 'GCSE german' you'll find lots of resources targeted at teens.

This looks really helpful for revision! Just what my daughter could use. I never thought of the UK test resources either - another good idea.

Thanks ladies!
