They work fine for smaller sections or for areas near the equator. I like Mollweide and Winkel Tripel the best. There are some edge distortions but sizes are shown more accurately than other projections. Dd10 and I learned about projections this week---we did this cool drawing-on-an-orange-then-flattening-the-peel activity and checked out various projections using K12's Human Odyssey vol 1 book and the National Geographic Xpeditions website.
