hillfarm
As I was sitting at the keyboard a few minutes ago, dd came running in and excitedly told me there was a snake that had just swallowed an egg in the woodshed. "Come look! Come look!" So I went out to see. Dh (who doesn't like snakes much) started yelling at me that I was NOT to pick the snake up. I looked in to see that there was indeed a 5 foot long blacksnake with a big egg bulge a few inches behind his head. Cool. Dd kept begging for me to pick it up with a stick, so dh relented and gave the go-ahead. I gently pushed the tines of a pitchfork under the snake and brought him out for them to see. "Now toss him in the yard down the hill.", dh instructed. I obediently gave Mr. Blacksnake a good toss, he hit the ground, pow! And out popped the egg, still whole! Upon closer inspection, when we stopped laughing, we realized that poor Mr. B had tried to digest one of our placer eggs that we use to keep our free range chickens using easily accessible nests, to remind them where to lay. I can only imagine the case of indigestion he was about to have with a fake egg inside! Lucky for him we came along! So for those of you who dream of someday relocating to the country, better start watching Jeff Corwin and learn your snake handling skills now while there's no rush!:D

Twigs
I once saw a museum exhibit of “odditiesâ€, including snakes (dead) that had swallowed ceramic doorknobs, darning eggs, and the like. Bad for the snakes, but very interesting to see.
Saille
How funny that you mention Jeff Corwin! I think of him every time I pick a snake up.
