I think the WTM suggest you should spend an hour a day on Math, and Language (Phonics and Writing), and 30 mintues a day of reading. If someone could just give me a sample to see what I should do on what days and how long per day. I am planning on day Math & Language everday but unsure about many other areas. Thanks Susan

My 2nd grader did:

Mon:

handwriting worksheet

phonics

English

Math

Art

Tue:

phonics

English

math

Music

History

Wed:

handwriting sheet

phonics

English

math

Science

Thurs:

phonics

English

math

History/geography

written narration on a book that she read over the week due.

Fri:

co-op

As for times, we just did what needed to be done. I had no set time. The L.A. and math stuff usually took 1.5-2 hrs. The extra subjects (art, music, history, science) can take anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hrs. Reading happens everyday, throughout the day. Readalouds from her and to her at bedtime.

We are doing monthly (year round):

10-12 hours math

15 each of:

30 minutes reading

15 minutes spelling

20 minutes grammar

5-10 minutes handwriting

30 minutes of free reading

and 18 sessions of WWE (some are short, some are long)

3 hours each music and art

6-9 hours each of history and science (including field trips)

12 hours PE

2+ hours of Latin.

We started Latin and WWE half way through the year, and skipped into WWE2 once I was sure he had the points of 1 down pat.

If kiddo takes a break, or is sick, or goes on a car trip, we make up the lost time before and after. If you are wondering, I got this by adding up all the times in the WTM for 2nd grade, and dividing by 12. Seemed as good a way as any.:)

HTH.

My daughter is finishing up 2nd grade. Here's a rough idea of what she did each day.

Piano 20 - 30 minutes

Independent Reading (SL Readers) - 30 minutes

Math (CLE) - 30 minutes

Grammar/spelling (CLE) - 30 minutes

History/Bible/Lit/Science (Listening to SL Core 3) - 1 hour

Math fact practice software - 10 - 15 minutes

Reading Comprehension software (Reading Detective)- 15 minutes 2X/week

Writing (WWE) - 20 minutes

I usually graded her work at night and went over anything new with her either first thing in the morning or after she did her piano practice. I read to her and her brother over breakfast. I give her a weekly checklist of what she needs to do and she is able to work through it pretty independently after I do whatever teaching I need to do with her.

She was easily done by lunch.
