cathmom
Can I just say that it really, really stinks that my son has to pay taxes on the need-based scholarships he receives so that he can go to school at all?
Gwen in VA
But he only has to pay taxes on the room & board part, not the part that covers the tuition, right?
cathmom
Yep, still money both he and I can't afford.
Halftime Hope
no matter where we are in life, it's tough when there isn't enough to go around! God bless!
cathmom
Thanks, Valerie! I think what really gets me about it is that it's not earned income that you can save part of to pay the taxes. It all goes towards school. And tuition is less than half of what he receives, but he couldn't live at home and go to college, so room and board is a necessary expense. And he looked all last semester for a job but we live in a state that has pretty high unemployment so he couldn't find anything. He does have a job now, and he'll be able to save for next year's taxes. But for this year we will have to help him pay it even though our EFC is 0. I mean, we'll find the money somewhere and deal with it. It just stinks.
KnitWit
I understand cathmom! I think, no matter which end of the spectrum anyone is on, everyone gets *stuck* when it comes to paying for higher ed.
