bethben
I'm looking for an anthology with short biographies of great artists and pictures they did for each century (19th century/20th century ect). Like a presidents book only with artists. Does such a thing exist? I want to have it for a reference at home to look up artists when we come across them in our history studies. I like looking at things in books not on a computer. Beth
DarlaS
Short Lessons in Art History The images are not great quality, but it has good biographies. Also: Usborne Introduction to Art: In Association with the National Gallery, London Beautiful images in that one--light on artist biographies. It's more about the work and the era it was produced in. Mandy in TN
I'm looking for an anthology with short biographies of great artists and pictures they did for each century (19th century/20th century ect). If you just want to be able to look up a masterpiece and have a good photo, Sister Wendy's 1000 Masterpieces has great photos. Sister Wendy's The Story of Painting also has wonderful photos. If you want a nice overview of movements with some little tidbits of information about the lives of the artists, The Annotated Mona Lisa is good. For younger children Usborne's Introduction to Art has less information, but better pictures than The Annotated Mona Lisa. 100 Artists Who Shaped World History has short biographies of artists, but no pictures. Gombrich's The Story of Art is organized by century, but it may be too much for elementary school and the photos are not as good as Sister Wendy's. Gardner's Art through the Ages is wonderful, but more for a high schooler who really likes art. Gardner's will cover more Eastern art than the rest which are pretty much just Western art. I hear good things about Janson's History of Art for Young People, but the only copy of a Janson title that I own is from the 70's I think and isn't visually interesting. bethben
The sister wendy's books seem to be what I'm looking for. I know it's an adult book, but I have the biographical information, I just want the pictures. Thanks! Beth
