savmom
I am wondering if anyone thinks the Teachers Guides are necessary for ETC books 1, 2, & 3? I hate to buy them if I can get by without them. But on the same token, if they would prove useful then I'll order them ASAP. FWIW, I have never taught Phonics before so that may factor into your suggestions. Thanks! Cindy
Carmen_and_Company
You need the guides only if you wish to administer tests. I looked through the guides after purchasing ETC for my middle DC when she learned to read 9 years ago, but never used them.
ProudGrandma
I have rarely used the guides myself. Like it was said, to give the tests they are helpful...but I have also just made up the information needed for the tests...I think if you look at the tests, I think you'll see what I mean. kbpaulie
I never taught phonics. Never owned nor felt the need to have the teacher's guides. KB
bbsweetpea
My oldest is in book 2 and we have not used the TG at all for 1 through 2. I just made up info for the tests instead of dragging out my guide
gaillardia
:iagree:I bought the teacher's guides for those books also, and having looked through them before I bought them, thought I'd use them. No, I don't use them. Tried, but not my style after all.
savmom
Thank you for all the replies! :001_smile: I kind of figured they were optional, but thought I should ask for advice before placing my order. I appreciate the quick responses. Cindy
Spy Car
I didn't even realize there were teachers guides until the other day when I came across them in our local teachers supply store (we are about to finish ETC 3). I can't say I know what I'm missing. I certainly don't feel there was anything I am missing as a teacher, or my son isn't getting as a student without these extra books. I tend to be one who like to really "understand the method," but for one-on-one instruction I'm not feeling the need. Bill
StephanieZ
I only needed/wanted the TG for the pre-primer books (Get Ready, etc.) and did fine w/o any other TGs. I've never seen the other ones, so I can't say they wouldn't be helpful, but I thought the books were very self explanatory at levels 1 & up. savmom
I had the guide for the A/B/C books and only looked at it a couple times. I figured levels 1+ might need the guide, but since everyone unanimously says "no" I won't waste my $$! Thanks again. Cindy
NavyWifeandMommy
I bought the TM for books 1 & 2. I haven't looked at it yet. I like TMs because sometimes I do get some ideas to help with the teaching. We are using the a,b,c ones w/o a TM.
