newlifemom
UPDATE**** Because I knew you were all sleeplessly wandering around, wondering where the IO should go. :D I found in a diagramming book that you can indeed do it either way. I am not sure which one I like b/c one way it looks like a preposition (a little) and the other it looks like a DO. I will have to ponder this more. :tongue_smilie: OMT has you diagram the indirect object under the verb, while Essentials of the English Language, which is similar to Shurley English, has you put it on the predicate line like a direct object in between the verb and the direct object. Is this a style preference, or is one way better than the other? What say the hive? TIA Edited January 11, 2010 by newlifemom

WagsWife
I can't say much for preference, because we have only used AG...but AG puts the indirect object under the verb with a "dog leg."
Stacy in NJ
AG puts it under the verb with a little tale. Edited January 5, 2010 by Stacy in NJ sp

LauraGB
Voyages places it under the verb as well. I learned it that way in school, too.
newlifemom
So, would anyone who uses Shurley English like to chime in here. I am wondering if it is a something particular to Shurley. I have seen differences with how compound sentences are diagrammed as well and am wondering how important these things are.
FloridaLisa
I'm curious because I've never seen diagramming in Shurley. We only parsed in Shurley and took up diagramming in R & S. Maybe they've added it to the books since I bought them several years ago? Thanks, Lisa

I will have to find out, b/c that is something that will bother me. :tongue_smilie:
SonshineLearner
Straight Forward Grammar and diagramming Sentences..... "Advanced English Series" has you put it under the verb with a backslash and then line from that.... so that the line you write on is parallel with the main line:-)

newlifemom
As sorry as I am to state, it was kinda bugging me, too, lol! What book did you find it in? Sorry, I just saw this. The book where I saw this is called Grammar & Diagramming Sentences. It is published by Garlic Press. I got it from the Classical Conversations catalog. HTH.
