Matryoshka
I've never used Mavis Beacon but my kids loved Typing Instructor for Kids. I did have them do the free BBC Dance Mat Typing before I spent money on Typing Instructor. That was a great fun intro to where all the keys are. Typing Instructor got their speed up and they had fun doing it.
Coleroo
I personally have always been a fan of Mavis Beacon (for about 13 years now I think). It's fun, has good graphics, and Mavis is a pretty great teacher as well for a computer simulator. :)
Laura Corin
I like Dance Mat Typing, free from the BBC. Laura
jade
We liked the SpongeBob typing program available on a CD for about $14 on both PC and Mac platforms. Yeah, maybe sounds goofy, but it presents the material in a fun way to kids. My son began using it in second grade and was a decent 10 wpm typist in third grade. My DD likes SpongeBob so I knew she'd use it with no complaint. Her typing has improved tremendously. She knew the home keys within a couple of lessons and she has gotten quite a bit faster - her "certificate" on the wall says 17 wpm (she's in 4th grade). I'm sure Mavis Beacon is excellent - it's been very popular for years and years. But we give SpongeBob two thumbs up - especially for elementary grades. TundraAcademy
We have both Sponge Bob and Typing Instructor Deluxe. My 7yo likes Sponge Bob. My 10 yo is annoyed with the goofiness of it and likes Typing Instructor. We have two Windows XP machines and I was able to get both programs for pretty cheap since they aren't Vista or Win7. Just a thought.
