T'smom
Does anyone know if I make fingerpaint and use food coloring....is it going to totally stain everything it touches? I'd like to have an idea of what to expect before we start experimenting!
kaylk in tx
food coloring WILL stain! I wouldn't use it in fingerpaints unless we didn't have to leave the house for a few days! hth
Aubrey
Uh-oh. This is one of our upcoming chemistry experiments. More info, warnings, etc., please! I am not a woman who abides stains & messes well. (Hence the fingerpaints in the *kitchen* cabinet that have only been used twice in 3 yrs.) joannqn
I would protect the floor and table, put the kids in clothes you don't care about, and use light colors. Light colors shouldn't stain their hands. If you use dark colors, you'll find it stains the skin just as darkly. However, I recently discovered a couple of baking soda paste scrubbings will get it off skin. I purposely poured food coloring directly to my fingers and got it off with 3 rounds of baking soda paste.
T'smom
Thanks so much for the info- I kindof figured it would stain, but thought I'd ask in case I was mistaken. I checked out this awesome book of Kid Concoctions at the library and food coloring is a prominent ingredient in quite a few of the 'concoctions'. Would powdered tempra paint stain as badly? kaylk in tx
tempera paint should come off easily.. it's what we always used when I was teaching in ps.... big containers of powder that we mixed up as needed. and fingerpaints that are already made (ie not home-made with food-coloring) should not stain. Dobela
Adding a bit of tempra paint works well but my favorite addition is Kool Aid - the real stuff. It can create some of the most amazing colors in homemade paints and playdohs. Plus it is nontoxic and will not cause staining once it is mixed in.
