WWE - story/questions/narration - help!

Dd is in WWE1. I read her the story and sometimes (too often), she can't answer half of the questions after I read her the passage. Today I re-read the entire passage when she had trouble, and when I asked her one of the questions for the second time, she says "Did they even talk about that?"

What should I do with her? I know she is fully capable, but I feel like she is just not paying any attention! I'm trying to be patient, but it's very hard some days.

Is she able to read it herself? If so, after you have read it twice and she still can't answer, I would point to the portion of the text that has the answer and have her read it aloud to you.

:iagree:

By WWE 3, they'll be reading them themselves. I'm not sure why the read aloud in earlier grades ... maybe to separate the skill of reading from the skill of comprehension for those that are not strong readers yet?

Or, you could try re-reading the relevant paragraph (or a few sentences before and after the pertinent sentence) for the specific question she's having trouble on.

What week are you on? I've noticed a huge jump in ability with my boys from week 1 to week 7. Things that they really struggled with in the beginning ... and reading comprehension was one of them ... they totally have the hang of now. Persevere!

That's what I do - I read it somewhere in the TM, I swear. If they can't answer a question, then re-read the part with the answer and re-ask the question. Hang in there!

I do it as "listening skills" with Becca. I know she comprehends better when she reads it herself, but I want her to learn to listen. ;)
