Beach Mom
I have been searching for a resource to help my DC learn how to use the library. We have been frequent visitors since they were very young, and while they have learned how to find things, but my sense is they are effective due to familiarity not knowledge. I would like a unit study or some worksheets to help them learn the dewey decimal system and the different types of resources in the library and to help the practice finding things. Does anyone know of such a resource? Thank you!
Trixie
Are they old enough to type to use the card catalog? My ds (10) loves this as it gives him a chance to practice his typing. Our library list usually includes both specific titles and general subjects, and he looks them up and then finds them in the library. Even within a single subject, the books will be scattered throughout the library in art, science, history/geography, etc. Also, our library has a Dewey decimal sheet available in the children's section; if yours doesn't, you could find one online to print. You could do a sort of library scavenger hunt, giving each child a list of books and subjects to find. Perhaps do it an an unfamiliar library if possible? That way, they're finding the items based on catalog numbers or authors' names rather than familiarity with the layout.
