  1. Three programs that I really like the looks of are Song School Latin, Lively Latin, and Latin Prep. Now, I don't really know how these would all flow scope-and-sequence-wise. Would it be appropriate to go from Song School Latin into Lively Latin and then into Latin Prep? I would prefer finding one program that would cover all our years of study, but I haven't yet found one that is secular. Any advice? We're still a couple of years away from starting Latin but I tend to plan in advance. :o
  2. Starfall was good for awhile, then she got tired of it. It did help reinforce the letter sounds though. Happy Phonics is actually on my list of things to buy when and if I ever get to place my next Rainbow Resource order. I don't know...maybe she just needs more time. I know I was reading before I went to K in ps (so by age 5 at least), and I think I'm comparing her to that. I realize that lots of kids don't learn to read until later. I hate scripted stuff, so OPGTR is out for me. I'm still considering SWR though. Thanks for all the input.
  3. Sorry, she's 6, and really struggling to read. She can write wonderfully, though.
  4. Can someone tell me what a typical lesson looks like? What you do, exactly? Any info would be great. Thanks.
  5. We're getting burned out on trying to teach our 6yo to read. I just can't figure out how to make it click. We've tried Phonics Pathways, ETC, and Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. Just curious what you all have used, what worked for you, and why. Thanks!
  6. I've heard that if you study Latin you can forego an English grammar program? Does anyone here do this? If so, what do you use for Latin? I'm afraid I would be missing something if we didn't do English grammar.
  7. Can someone recommend a good collection of these? There are so many to choose from, and I have to order without actually seeing the books, as I have no bookstore in my town. :( I would like a complete collection but nicely illustrated. TIA
  8. Help me choose for my 6yo: Lollipop Logic Dr. Dooriddles Can You Find Me? Visual Perceptual Skill Building Mindbenders I'm basically just looking for something fun to do once a week or so (whenever we have a little extra time). I haven't seen any of the above, so I don't know which to choose. Can anyone help me?
  9. Thanks. I must have confused level 1 with meaning 1st grade.
  10. Daily: MUS Alpha copywork for handwriting practice continue Phonics Pathways and Bob Books 2x per week: R.E.A.L. Science Life SOTW (1 day for reading and 1 day for activities) 3x per week: Growing With Grammar 1x per week: Artistic Pursuits (continuing from this year) Pearables Home Ec for Hsers (don't really need this but thought it looked fun) critical thinking/logic activities such as Mindbenders, Lollipop Logic, or other Well, tell me what you think. Too much? I think we'll just sort of touch on geography with some mini-units throughout the year. Am I missing anything else? TIA
  11. My dd won't start Latin for at least a couple of years yet (she's struggling with learning to read, so to avoid any unnecessary stress/confusion, we're putting Latin off for awhile). I want to go ahead and get a jump on this, as I have no Latin background whatsoever. I don't know what program I intend to use with dd, but I'm leaning towards Lively Latin or Latin Prep. (We're secular.) Does anyone have any recommendations on programs for ME, so I can go ahead and start learning Latin myself? Remember, I need to start from the absolute beginning! Thanks.
  12. Just curious if anyone has taught handwriting without using an actual program.
  13. We are using Ancients level 1, and I have pretty much ditched it and am just using SOTW with the AG. A lot of the extra reading that HO suggests is the same as the reading the AG suggests. HO contains maps, so does the AG. Some of the craft projects are similar too. So I plan on finishing the SOTW series and then going back to HO for level 2. HTH
  14. Does anyone know what ages these are intended for? I couldn't find it on the website. Would they be suitable for a secular hser? I'm considering them for classical studies in the future. Thanks!
  15. Sorry..one more! I know one of you said you don't do timelines until grade 5. Do the rest of you also wait until your kids are older, or do you think it is of value in the grammar stage also?
  16. Thanks to all of you who responded to my other thread about timelines. Now, one more question. :) How do you decide what dates/events to include on your timeline? Thanks again!
  17. My dd is only 5, so we haven't used a timeline yet. I've seen the ones you can purchase, and I've also heard of people making their own. I guess my question is: What exactly do you DO with the timeline? Does anyone have a link to an example of a timeline so I can see what we're talking about? Thanks!
  18. Compare, contrast...tell me which one I want, LOL. I'm stuck. Are they both secular? Is either one of them more "fun" than the other? Both appropriate for a 6yo beginning reader? TIA.
  19. Wow, you guys make good use of your time. I never would have thought of multitasking in the shower! ;)
  20. Looking for something similar to Veritas Press or Progeny Press, but secular. Anyone know of anything? Thanks.
  21. Because I'm too lazy right now to pull out my books and search for the answer, I'm going to ask here instead. :o When do you all teach geography to your kids? I certainly don't see the need in doing it every year, but I'm having a hard time deciding WHICH year to do it. And what do you use? I haven't found a good secular geography program that I think I would like yet. TIA
  22. Has anyone used the two together? I want to use History of US for our American History, but am not sure when to use it. Would you do it alongside vol 4 of SOTW, or would you do a year of American History after finishing SOTW? This will not be for a few years, but I'm trying to figure out a semi-plan for K through 8 just so I can feel a bit more prepared.
