  1. What happened, if you don't mind my asking? I got excited in my last post and forgot to include this. I think my brain is going googy tonight. I have a cold with sore throat AND I am trying to be ready for a 1/2 marathon Sat morning. Go figure:tongue_smilie: Guess I will go and research more on dairy cows. Tani
  2. I can find at the library. And, cows sure are cute. I have thought about the butter and being able to freeze milk, but, can you believe I forgot about icecream! My favorite food! Anyhow, you made some really valid points. I think I will go and write down what I want out of a milk animal. I am now getting really excited again. Thanks.
  3. I would love to hear what those of you who have milkers of either kind would say. What are the pros and cons of both breeds? I have 15 acres, fenced. Also have 5 horses, 10 hens, dogs, cats, and a gecko. Have a barn for yucky days and we usually put the horses up at night as well. I have been looking at getting milk goats but have also thought about a milk cow. Being such a big decision I thought I might could get some thoughts here. Thank you so very much:001_smile: Also, I am not sure how to find my posts after I write them because things seem to get "swallowed" up, kwim? It usually takes me a little while to search through the board for my posts to see replies. Thanks for patience.:tongue_smilie:
  4. Thank you for your advice. If only I lived closer, I could wait and get one of your adorable babies and be able to feel confident as well:001_smile: Your homestead sounds somewhat like ours. We also grow an organic garden, raise and sell free range eggs, have horses, dogs, cats, and a Gecko. It is so much fun.
  5. salt, pepper, bunch of fresh parsley, cumin, and garlic. Oh, and sometimes a bit of soy sauce or tamari. No flour or cornmeal. Fry like salmon patties or in a deep fryer. Got this recipe from a Greek friend of mine (who is in her 90's) and it is wonderful. She also says you cannot make them right with canned beans and everytime I have tried, they flopped.:tongue_smilie: Anyway, the dill sauce is a great add on to it as well a tahini lemon sauce. I put these into whole wheat pitas with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and sauce. yum. Now I am hungry, again! :001_smile:
  6. I like the idea of smaller goats that won't overwhelm me with milk right off the bat:D Thank you.
  7. my last concern is what the goats eat. If they were to eat a poisonous plant, would this come through in the milk and make a person sick? I am thinking about getting a couple of milk goats to use here on the farm and I am trying to learn all I can. I am also looking for ideas on what breeds are the best, where is a good place to get supplies, etc. I live on a farm with horses, dogs, cats, laying hens and have plenty of room for a couple of goats. Last weekend we got to try milking and drinking the milk from a goat and it was wonderful. With the price of milk and the amount we use I was thinking this might be a viable option? Thank you for any and all input to a novice here! :tongue_smilie:
  8. try.:tongue_smilie: I really appreciate all the help I get on this board. :001_smile:
  9. I saw on another thread that you have workbooks and TM's. I got my text used from Amazon but didn't realize about the rest. It seems that this would round out the program. Could you please advice me on what and where to find these things? :001_smile: I get very confused at the website. Thanks for all the help. Tani
  10. having these same symptoms but I am very allergic to ragweed (amongst other things). Just a thought ;o) Best thing to do if it keeps bothering you is see the doctor. :tongue_smilie: Tani
  11. I agree that their website is awful, at least for me :001_smile: I am off to Amazon, etc.
  12. I have gone to the website but can't find a place to order. Am I just being tech. challenged or what? :tongue_smilie: Thanks for the help. Tani
  13. activities going on. Easy to break into, the people here and in Cleveland as well. Cleveland is 20 min north of Chatt. Lots of sights, parks, wilderness areas, city activities, ie. art museum, Discovery museum, aquarium, biking trails and much more. Can you tell I love the area? :tongue_smilie: Tani
  14. His is 15 yo who is very smart but has been diagnosed with severe dyslexia. Need suggestions in helping him? Thanks so much, Tani
  15. Hi, I am going Apologia General Science with my 6th grade dd. She is loving it. I follow the schedule from donnayoung.org or com, (I always get it mixed up ;o)) Anyway, it has been a big hit here. Good luck. Tani
  16. I have tons of stuff for hands on. My dd11 is all about projects and I don't see her losing interest any time soon :D I would need something tougher than AS 1 I think. My ds 8 is VERY history oriented, he loves, acts it out, dresses up and acts it out, can list all kind of historical war facts, Rev. through WWII. I guess I just feel bad sometimes when I realize he has been doing dd's history levels with her and I wonder if I should have done more age appropriate things with him. He does seem to be thriving, though, so I guess I am second guessing myself needlessly. Geez, nothing like 'talking it out' with this lengthy post. Thanks to all who take the time to read and reply. :o)))))) Tani
  17. Plain white vinegar mixed in water. I put my lettuce and greens into a sink of vinegar water, (about 1 cup per sinkful of water) swish and soak for 5 to 10 minutes then rinse. It works with all my vegies and counters and bathrooms, etc. Works great. HTH.:001_smile:
  18. between Sonlight 4 or WP. My dc's are 3rd and 6th grades. We have been doing history chronilogically and we are now at the time of Lewis and Clark. I am tired of pulling everything together myself and want an open and go curr. I am leaning towards SL but am wondering if my two dc's would both be able to do it without the younger losing out, kwim? I can go either way on the hands on stuff. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you. Tani
  19. do you need to get textbooks for them? Thanks for all the help.
  20. love to do experiments and such but I also feel like 'I' need somethng more organized and planned for me to teach to dd. Thank you. :):)
  21. I have been looking at Pearson Sciences and McMillon (sp). We have done WTM and I am thinking of maybe a more textbook oriented program for my dd. I need to beef up science for next year and this is a favorite subject with dd. Any suggestions, good or bad, are very appreciated;o)
