  1. I like discovery methods. It helps to own the learning. I think learning is able to stick much better after "discovery" afterwards I usually have ds reteach me or explain what was discovered. For us we are able to make discovery more like playing. We have used it for math (Miquon) and science. Reading books and talking about them leads us to discover parts of a story, and then we play games where we use those same things to make a story. Some subjects I find are much more needing direct instruction. Phonics, spelling rules for example. And then I also think there can be too much discovery. Sometimes you need to just do some reading to understand what others have already discovered.
  2. Has anyone used the SCM pet store math? What are your thoughts? Is it a good unit study to change up the routine? How long does it take to finish? Does it bring out the real life application of math well? We use a lot of games and everyday math so this looks like a fun way to add that in more. But I already have a lot of math resources (can you hsve too many?😂)
  3. Yes, I wash the reusable ones each day. The disposable ones I am using come out to be around 10 cents each. (I live in Asia, stuff is cheaper here) We are moving at the beginning of the year and will need masks for over 25 hours. I know I will need to change often, but I can only imagine what my face will look like after. We have already recovered from COVID, so really I am not the most worried about me getting it. But the law here is to wear them.
  4. Ok so Happy Masks say they are good for 50 washes. So are people spending that much every 50 days or so on masks? I am having such a hard time wanting to spend money on masks, but I need something that fits well and will work well, and not cause acne 😭 why does it need to be so difficult?
  5. Thanks looks like the 13 books are out as an option.
  6. I have sensitive skin so I am not surprised my skin us acting up now. I wash reusable ones after each day's use. I don't have enough to go through after each time use. Some days I go out 2 or 3 times. I use free and clear detergent. Do all disposable have nickle? I am allergic to nickle. Is the nose clip things nickle?
  7. I have to wear one each time I am outside, groceries, public transportation. So I end up wearing it for a while. Yesterday I needed to pay my hospital bill, then ran errands on that side of town at the one big grocery store. So with transportation I had one on for 4 hoursish. I probably need to change it more often. I just don't know how. If I have a mask on I am always around people.
  8. Slowing I have been adding games for schooling. There are a lot for math out there. I want them all 🙄 We do games for math on Fridays. Math seems to be the easiest for adding games in. There seem to be a lot of newish games out for science. I want to plan some unit studies with games and some good books. More casual than formal study. As I really have had a hard time finding elementary science I love and can get to each week. Anyways, how do you use games in your schooling? What are your favorite math, science, and history games? Do science and history games fill more of the theme aspect, or do they actually teach and enhance learning? Favorite places to look for good educational games?
  9. That has been my thoughts too. There has to be one that breathes well yet still works. Or am I looking for a unicorn?
  10. I am breaking out like crazy from masks. I have tried disposable paper ones (thin) and cloth ones. I am still breaking out. Anyone else? Have you found masks that don't cause acne?
  11. Joy Hakim's a Story of US or A Child's First Book of American History (Beautiful Feet)? 13 volumes seems like a lot to get through! But BF's book seems like it might be too young. Anyone have thought on these 2? Or another spine that is good. We like narratives. Ds loves A Child's History of the World if that gives an idea.
  12. Rod and Staff sounds like it would fill your needs. There is also a book by Rod and Staff that is a grammar reference. You could use that and teach through your dictation. Otherwise Primary Language Lessons by Emma Serl is available on google books. I have enjoyed it a lot!
  13. F and windy. Although I visited our new place in summer so I don't really know what it feels like in the cold of winter. We move first week of January.
  14. I am moving where it will be subzero for most of winter. I will be taking public transportation so a lot of standing and waiting and walking. I do have a nice one for skiing already.
  15. Looks like I need to look at Lands End.
  16. Yes, I am planning on spending a lot so that it will last.
  17. I am in need of a new winter coat for the subzero temps. What brands have been your favorite? Columbia is the brand I have used, but it isn't very warm.
  18. I wish Masterbooks hadn't taken it over. The original are great.
  19. DS, 8yo and in 3rd grade, has loved learning Greek Myths. I want to find ways to encourage him in his love. I think he will like the National Mythology Exam. Does the exam cover all myths? Or does it focus on Greek myths? We have the D'Aulaire's book and audiobook. Will this be enough to study with? He also has watched Mythic Warriors. Any resources that have been helpful to study with? What is the format of the exam? (short answer, fill in the blank, multiple choice)
  20. We have really liked Rod and Staff. Maybe go up a year? It is so well priced too. It does a good job of working on rules during the week and can be done independently. For a good speller I think it is a great way to be sure and cover all the rules and common words.
  21. Yes, bad form for a joke. I have several friends with grandfathers/fathers who were nazis. So maybe that shapes my view.
  22. Are they reading well? If so drop phonics. I haven't used AAR so I don't know about the readers, but if they are reading ok you can just have them pick out books to read from the library. WWE 2 will have copywork so just use that. We have not found vocabulary needed. I would wait and see how your weeks are going and about 8 weeks in see if you feel you could add something else in. It takes time to adjust so I would start off light and then add in and see if you are still getting to everything.
