  1. OK, both my son and I don't understand what he's doing in Algebra 2 so I hope somebody out there can.

He's doing Descartes' rule of signs and has to find the number of positive and negative roots for the following equations:

    f(a)= a^5-4a^2-7

    f(x)= 3x^3+9x^2+8x

Two more problems dealing with roots:

Find a quadratic equation with roots (4+i) and (4-i)

Given the equation x^3-2x^2+x-3=0, what are the possible rational roots?

TIA to whomever can help us....especially me with my feeble brain!:tongue_smilie:

  2. Last nights game was amazing!!! It goes to show everyone that the Red Sox can't be put down. My DH and I were going to go to bed until Pedroia got a hit and then Big Papi blasted one outta there.

We were so glad that the Red Sox wiped the smiles off the faces of the Rays...HA HA Ha!! We couldn't stand it when, in the second inning, Garza was grinning and making it known that Fenway was quiet. The RAys are a good team, but they're way too cocky for my tastes.

I'm also glad that the Phillies won and put the Dodgers in their place. I couldn't bear to see Manny(spoiled) play in yet another WS.

Anyway, we'll see what happens in the next 2 games. Whoever goes to the WS will make it a very interesting game to watch.

BTW, I just dread hearing those stupid cowbells yet again. Boy, the people in Tampa Bay are annoying...(aka fairweather fans).

  3. I just finished reading "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom. This was the first book I've read by this author. I think he's fantastic. He's a new favorite author for me. The next book I'm going to read by him is "Tuesdays with Morrie". I hope it's as good as the last one.

    So what's everyone else reading?:001_huh:

  4. Ok, my son and I have had it with proving theorems.

Any Geometry whizzes out there please help us write the proof for this:

Prove: If an isosceles triangle has an altitude from the vertex to the base, then the altitude bisects the vertex angle.

Given: triangle ABC is isosceles; line CD is the altitude of base line AB.

To prove: line CD bisects angle ACB

    Plan: ?????

Thanks for any help at all!

  5. I can't stand McCain AND Palin. Who do you think put the economy in the state that it's in now? Yes, Bush and the Republicans. I've had enough of the past 8 years and want a change. We're gonna give Obama a chance and see how he does. Can't be much worse.

Do any of you have HBO? My DH and I watch Bill Maher and feel exactly as he does. He calls McCain "a 200yo man" and Palin "a catagory 5 moron." I couldn't agree more.

No flames, please. This is my personal opinion and I think I'm entitled to it.:D
