  1. Is there a way to combine this study with a younger child?

Where would a child come in who just finished Renaissance and Reformation (with TOG, we would come in Year 2, section 3).

    What religious background is BJU?

It sounds so good. And I am so scared/excited to do TOG, but I appreciate that history is only 1 subject and need'nt monopolize school. Thanks for the additional information.

  2. Because, when I sat down at the computer and really looked at that 3 week plan, that was what made me excited and gung ho about TOG!

I really considered TRISMS. I discounted it because I also have a Lower Grammar/borderline UG boy as well as a dialectic. TRISMS would work well for oldest ds, but I really like the legwork for younger already done for me (so I didn't have to invent it all for younger).

I love hearing about the academics of History Odyssey. I think that TOG is also very academic, but allows time for some fun! (It would be considered very academic, right?!)

Now, some people have posted that the readers/read alouds in TOG aren't perhaps as engaging as SonLight, but my eldest likes G.A. Henty books. That being said, I think that he would enjoy whatever he reads!! :) However, I wouldn't mind if someone chimed in about their lit. suggestions. I do really like that there is lit. analysis with TOG.

So, thanks for bearing with me as I make this momentous decision for myself and my family. Thanks also to those who wrote about their experiences. It is great to have help from all you ladies! Thanks so much!

The funny thing is...do you think that school kids get this much emphasis on history at school? Here I am stressing about which program is better, etc., and if I really step back and look - I bet there aren't many kids who get a solid chronological education in history! Gotta keep things in perspective, Shelly!!

  3. I am so close to making my final selection for history and I really want to buy Tapestry of Grace. I know I have posted on this before - the why's and why nots.

I have to confess, the biggest "why not" is me! I am worried that without it being a "do the next lesson" curriculum, I may fail at it. Someone please convince me that this is a doable thing for me! I want to be successful, and I am reliable in my homeschooling - sometimes to a fault. The fun TOG injects is what I am looking forward to - I want to be fun again, yet get it done!!

Thanks, sorry I need so much handholding! Just when I am ready to hit the "add to cart" button, I read another post about something better, then that restarts my insecurities about being able to handle TOG!!

  4. My husband was stationed at the Naval Air Station. We bought our first house in 1992 on Lady's Island. I drove to work over that bridge and watched the dolphins everymorning!

I worked on King St. Did you ever go to "All you can Eat Chocolate Night" at the Chocolate Tree? I just love Beaufort. In fact, my mother in law just drove through there last week and took a picture of my old house. My azaleas are huge!

Ahhhhh, memories. Our first son was first thought of there!

  5. We went to AZ in Feb. It was awesome! Absolutely LOVED the Pink Jeep tour. They were pricey, but it was just incredible and worth the price. You need to call way in advance to schedule, because they are booked way out. Otherwise, Sedona was beautiful, but too commercial for us, but did I mention that it was Beautiful??If you go in summer there are some neat rock slides (into water) that I've heard you should not miss. It was too cold for us in Feb.

There are tons of hiking options and Flagstaff has a neat museum ( think it is museum of Northern Arizona) and a neat tour of the home of the main logging family in the area - pretty home/child friendly etc.

  6. It could be tendonitis. I first developed this when I used to NordicTrack. It is cause by repetitive movement. Your tendon that runs through your shoulder develops little bumps on it (picture one of those old chains that looks like it has b-b's on it and fastens by pulling a b-b through a slot).

Mine would often feel cold like that and really painful. It goes away (I haven't had a recurrence for like 3 years now!) But, it will come back if you injure it again. Mine was gone for years, but came back in Fl, when I carried my suitcases out of the airport!

What can yo do about it? Your chiropractor should have an ultrasound machine. Not the kind used for looking at babies, but a low frequency heat. Have him use that on your shoulder and down your arm. When I have this therapy only once, I am fixed! But it could take a couple treatments.

  7. If you get your bonus bundle, does it have everything listed (bookwise) that you need to buy? Or is just going to the bookshelf good enough? Or what is that Loom thing. Sorry, just a bit confused about some of the different places to look for info. (they have such a big/great website!)

  8. Am ready to order my Year 2 redesigned. I know I want to purchase the whole year + the bonus bundle. I would like to additionally purchase Evaluations, pop quiz and porfolios. Are these things all needed by your estimation, or is this stuff I wouldn't use? I am concerned I wouldn't use the portfolios...

anyway, at which point is it best to order your additional books? Would I be saving on shipping if I ordered my lit. with it, or am I safe ordering separately? I will probably get alot from the library, but will also buy some, but will probably get from Amazon if it is cheaper.

Am I ready? Just get those things I mentioned and go? Yikes, I'm excited and scared all at once!! Thanks.

  9. I was an Alpha Xi Delta. It was a waste of money, too much alcohol/parties, etc. But, through it I met my DH who totally is the most wonderful part of my whole college experience. So, it was worth it!! We've been married 18 years, and he is still the cute Delta Tau Delta he always was! (neither of us can believe we were who we were then!! And neither are active post-college!).

  10. We just took unit 4 test in Apologia Gen. Science (physics chapter). Son studied very well, knew formulas inside and out and was able to solve all the reviews. We got to the test and he did ok (got a 77%), but should have done much better as per his review.

How much do I review? We looked at his answers and he was able to correct them when I pointed out the problems. Can I just say, "Yahoo, my son can get a 77% on a physics test in grade 6!!" and just move on, or do we need to give extra questions for practice? I am leaning toward celebrating that we are done with physics (not a subject of mine!!).

How hardnosed do I have to be???

  11. I am looking at what books I should buy for next year. We have a good library system, but I am sure that there are some reference books that would be best purchased.

Could you help me with what gets the most use, please? Year 2 redesign Units 3 and 4.

Ok, here's another question... We are planning on coming into TOG at those particular units as we have studied the topics in units 1 and 2 already. I have a Dialectic and a Lower/upper grammer. Would you buy the first two units and just keep them handy for younger ds when he gets back around to that cycle? I was thinking that may be smart, so I don't have to rebuy a bunch of support curriculum (Writing aids, mapaids, etc.) when we finally get around to using them. Of course, I was trying to save money by not buying them! This course of action could cost more long term potentially. Thanks for the info!:tongue_smilie:

  12. How about one original narration written and one original narration that you wrote down to be used as copywork? Or maybe if you teach typing, this would be a good time to implement it - typing is probably easier than handwriting if they know how to type!

    Good luck

  13. At 9, he can surely do 1 narration a week, right? Do any others that week orally. I think multiple narrations each week for a child that age is over kill. I wouldn't skip the narrations, just do them orally. It helps their verbal skills - he narrates, you write. Expect complete sentences, etc. HTH

  14. What I would do with the littles, is to start reading the Story of the World series with them and do the activity guide. Start them young with that, it isn't too much - mostly listening to the cool stories and answering a few questions. The narrations are very important, too. I swear that is what made my 6th grader such a strong writer. When they are narrating, I kind of lead their sentences (you know, like - Then what happened? Oh, yes, let's use complete sentences - the king and queen did what? That kind of thing)

I'd start something as big as TOG on the 2nd cycle. But, that's just me.:tongue_smilie:
