  1. Hi Nanmom,

Did any of your dc do Home2Teach's high school honors program or did they just use the 6 week class? If the high school honors program was used, would you please comment on the program (likes, dislikes, rigor)?

Dd has done the Paragraph, Writing about Books, Expository and now Poetry Writing and Analysis. I suspect Miss Eileen will suggest Advanced Creative Writing for next session to finish out the school year. Just thinking about what to do next year.

    TIA,

    Sandra

  2. I can't be of much help but I will tell you what we did. The college my sons wanted to go to was 3 hours away so we moved there so they could still live at home. I know this sounds extreme but we have 2 sons in college at the same time and dorms are expensive! My husband is a state trooper so a transfer was easy. We moved 8 miles from the college so they can commute everday. Neither son wanted to live in a dorm. They VALUE their sleep and knnew they would have a hard time studying in a dorm. Now their friend who lives 3 hours away where we used to live is moving in with us this fall semester for the same reason..
  3. We used home2teach for about 5 years with 2 different kids. Loved the program and very happy with their writing progress. Both are in college and are good writers. Both made A's in all their English classes in college. I give Eileen the credit for their success. We also used Writeathome. We used it as a supplemnt to eileens class. We did essay and research paper with it. Really enjoyed it. Both are well worth the money. Both prgrams are good but different. I think they complement each othr well. Eileen really digs into literary analysis in high school grades. I felt my kids needed hand holding writing a research paper in a subject like history so used Writeathome for that.
  4. We used WriteAtHome and home2teach. We used them both off and on for over 5 yers. I highly recommend them both.
  5. My kids chose the ACT partly because in Tennessee that is what most people take here but also because they preferred being tested in content area. I don't know how it is now but at the time they took it the SAT had a required essay that my kids did not want to have to write. The colleges they applied to did not require the ACT essay that is available but did require the SAT essay.
  6. Our church, Church of God, does allow divorce and reamarraige. It is not looked at favorably except in cases of adultry and if you asked our pastor he would say it was wrong but he would not kick you out of the church. It is considered when taking on a position of leadership in the church and usually those remarried except in case of adultry will not be allowed to hold positions of leadership.
  7. My husband and I write little notes to each other frequently and leave them through out the house, in chest of drawers, on the counter ect. We write silly poems for each other expressing our love for each other. We have been married 24 years but we both still enjoy it. We both try to do something special with our kids which is usually going for a walk with them. I sometimes call him at work for no reason but just to tell him I miss him and love him. Spending time with my kids and just letting them talk even when I may not really be interested seems to mean more to them and make them feel loved than anything else. Quality time with my husband and kids is the most important way we show love to each other in my family.
  8. sure was close game. Both teams played well!
  9. I would check with any colleges you think he may want to attend. My son is going to the leading engineering university in TN and they are very helpful with parents of precollege age on telling them what classes to take. Be careful, a friend decided to major in engineering but did not take necessary classes in high school or first year of college and it really put him behind. His guidence couselor in high school did not advise him properly. He will have to take a whole year extra classes to get cought up.
  10. my kids are high school age and up but when they were younger I co- led a small group that met weekly in my home. We tried having a mothers night out type meeting but it never worked out since most of us did not have baby sitters. So we moms visited while the kids played within eye range. We all brought bag lunches and food for our own family to save on expenses most of the time unless we were doing a special type thing. We would let each mother schedule a field trip per month. We did free things like visiting the local vet, fire station park, jail ect. We would plan speical crafts every so often like make valentine cards where all the mothers shared the expense. We also had a larger more organized local group that some of the mothres ended up going to. We found not all mothers personalities mixed well and it was better that those who did not mix well went on to other groups. There were some real personality conflicts and the groups membership was constantly changing but that is just reality unfortunately.
  11. We used ChalkDust Precalculus. We really liked it and thought it thoroughly prepared my son for college calculus. We emailed Mosley a few times for help and he was quick to respond and helpful. I would recommend it and use it again if I had more kids. nanmom
  12. My husband and I made the decision to homeschool our kids before they were even born. My family had a fit; thought it was a terrible mistake. They harrassed me for 13 long yeras about it. I have one son who is a sophmore in college and one in 12th grade but taking college classes also. Both are straight A stuents. I try not to rub it in their faces at family get togethers but I do make them aware of how well they are doing. I used various curriculums but by high school they were mostly doing everything on their own. Just wanted to encourage those out there that may be discouraged or think they can't do it. I am not that smart but I didn't have to be. I just bought curriculum to teach the stuff I didn't not know. BTW my kids far exceded me academically by the time they were in 10th grade but it still worked out. Be encouraged, you can do this!:iagree:Nanmom
