  1. We use BJU hard drive for some subjects with my struggling 11yo son and watching and listening to the lecture has been a good fit. Not perfect, but good. If your son can pay attention to the video lesson he may enjoy it. Does he learn well through visual media? You can watch some sample lessons and see what he thinks. Math didn't work for us, but science, reading and english have gone pretty well.

    HTH!

    Thanks!

  2. We have the same issue, and I'm doing LOE - just the spelling - with my 10 yo to address it. It is really helping. The spelling dictation method of LOE really seems to be doing the trick - it gives her a chance to think about how you apply the spelling rules, and it gives us a language to talk about spelling errors she makes in writing, or for me to help her with spelling words when she asks. We are doing one lesson a week (one day), using the Advanced spelling list. It doesn't take much time, and it really is helping a lot! If I were you, since I already have LOE, I would make it a priority to do regularly. Have you watched the videos on the website? The spelling dictation method that Denise demonstrates is really what has made the difference.

Thank you. I haven't looked at her site but plan to. I think I am going to finish the year with LOE and put her in R&S in the fall. We are on lesson 10 in LOE, I just need to get my act together!

  3. One other thought, as you go about your enrichment activities, whether that's a colleague over for dinner or a museum, ask the men for their experiences. Probably the most interesting I've heard was a sailor on the USS Constitution app 8 years ago...that fella, unprompted saw a lot of teen boys who weren't paying much attention to the tour, and added in his story. He had lived for sports in high school, won many awards, but barely graduated with a 2.0. Enlisted with his buddies, but was so behind in academics he didn't have a chance at any technical type of jobs. Luckily stationed in Boston, he has easy access to the education he wasn't able to get from his rural Tennessee high school; he is conscious of the time it is taking and the opportunities he is missing out on to improve his income.

    I love this idea!

  4. Have you ever stepped on a spider and like 4647651434841141 microscopic baby spiders exploded everywhere? Yeah that happened to me once. Luckily it was outdoors. :leaving:

My oldest daughter was pettsitting this summer and the people have a pool. There was one of those float things you can lay on, leaning by the pool wall. She grabbed it and was floating in the pool. She glanced down and saw something brown on her stomach so she flicked it off and tiny spiders started crawling all over her. She screamed, dove into the water and then into the house for a hot shower. I would have died.
