  1. I feel the same way. I hate that "gifted" is only for those children whose parents are financially well off. Guess my kid just doesn't make the cut. Sad but true.
  2. Well, I suppose the title says it all. Which is a better choice for latin for my middleschooler: Lukeion/Scholarsonline who study Wheeler of CLRC studying Oxford Latin? Has anyone had any experience with either text book? Secondly, has anyone got preferences over Lukeion, Scholarsonline or CLRC for latin? Finally, we were using Greek, an intensive course by Hansen and Quinn for Greek and again wondering which of the three above would be the best fit. We only got to chapter 4 and now I need to outsource as I am not doing a good job of teaching either latin or greek. I have done a search on this forum but the discussions weren't this specific. Any other suggestions are appreciated! Best Mandy
  3. Wow! What would I do without your experience? Thank you. My child is registered and we will see how it goes. In your experiences, which of the gifted programs has offered the most to your children?
  4. Well ladies, I have to thank you all in advance for your advice. I went to register my child today and they wouldn't let me register him because he is not 13 yrs of age yet. Looks like all my problems are solved. No SAT this year....no wonder they ask for the PSAT for 8/9. Looks like we have bought ourselves two years. I really am only doing the SAT to get him into the gifted and talented programs. WE simply can't afford their camps and I have heard mixed reviews about their online courses. He does University online courses that actually gets him credit. So I am still not sold on the SATs. Anyone else gone the online route for college?
  5. So my son did the trial and got 440 for english and 450 for math. Should I just wait until he is in 7th grade so he can get a better score?
  6. Thanks so much. Do they have a minimum limit for 5th graders? Or is it just a generic over 440 for each math and english if you are under 7th grade. Sorry if I am not being clear.
  7. Oh Arcadia!!! Thank you sooooooo much. This is what I have been searching for. Their websites are so vague. So for all those to be accepted, do they need to get over 440 for math and english?
  8. Hi all I need some advice. I have been on so many different websites for CTY, Davidson's Institute, John Hopkins, Duke etc. They all seem to only look at SAT grades for entrance into their programs in 7th grade. Am I missing something here? WHen I decided to research what requirement for my son in 5th grade to make the cut for these gifted programs, that was the first time I thought that there was a difference for each grade. Seeing that he is only going into 6th gradein 2017-18, should I wait until he is finishing 7th grade ie. in two years. Any suggestions? Hoping some of you have done this route before. Best Mandy I know you said that you were heading up the CTY in your previous company. I have been on so many different websites for CTY, Davidson's Institute, John Hopkins, Duke etc. They all seem to only look at SAT in 7th grade. Am I missing something here? WHen you asked me what requirement for what grade, that was the first time I thought that there was a difference for each grade. Seeing that he is only going into 6th grade, maybe I should wait until he is finishing 7th grade ie. in two years. Any suggestions?
  9. Just to throw a spanner in the works; I received an email from DA last year that they no longer need their participants to achieve 145+ but will accept 140+. I have always had my suspicions and hence, never researched it further. But thought I would add in that morsel of juicy information....
  10. Congratulations to all mamas. So proud of the hard work you have put in. And the brilliant children you are creating to make this world a better place.
  11. We love Crash Course for Anything. Just find them on Youtube.
  12. This is such an informative thread. Would you mind giving me the names of the websites to read up on the tests. I had compiled a list of tests for my 5th grader to take this year but unfortunately, never managed to follow through. I would be more than happy to post those if anyone is interested. Best Mandy
  13. Thanks so much for this alternative. I didn't have a single response! So I guess I will be doing the private competitions. I appreciate it.
  14. Hi All I am trying to put a few competitions together. These are team competitions and my private school is happy to have your child participate if they are homeschooled. You would simply need to sign a liability waiver. That being said, I have put the competitions below. You can simply divide the cost of the competition by the minimum number of students in the team. Happy to answer any questions. It would be easier if your student is in Southern California but it is not a pre-requisite. Best Mandy Gr Site Cost Min. 15. Hi all I just came across this site Murderous Math and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this site. Or if the book was better. Or simply if either were very good? I know my son would spend hours on the site but we only allow half an hour a day of electronics. Any thoughts? Best Mandy
  16. I may a bit late for this group but I have a ds 9 and 5 and we would love to take part in the Math Circle. Thanks.
  17. Hi all I am so sorry it has taken so long to respond. I had the emails coming into my other account and don't check it often. Thanks for giving me a definite path to go via OT/PT. The problem with the 4 PT people I have spoken to is that they are clueless about primitive reflexes. My own MD hasn't heard of it either. I am sure my insurance would cover it if my MD referred me but none of them have acknowledged that it is a true problem. I was thinking of going the Optometrist route but then again, nothing is wrong with his vision? The problem with all of this is having a HG, highly functioning co-ordinated kid with no neurological problems.....again, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much for all your advice, you have solidified my research that I do need to get an evaluation before I try remediating myself. Once again, a huge thank you from a hugely confused mom.
  18. Hi WTM Forum I was wondering if anybody has been in a similar position to myself. I have a HG 8 DS who was evaluated with having all his primitive reflexes still active. The company Brain Balance wanted $6500 to get rid of these reflexes. So I started looking into it myself. It looks like vision therapy, sound therapy and OT are employed. Has anyone used this on their children? If so, which therapies and what was the most successful? I have started researching but there is such a plethora of therapies out there, I don't know where to start. Thanks! Much appreciated. Best Regards Mandy
