  1. I'm not sure exactly what I think should be done about books like that, but history has shown that banning books only increases their popularity. So I really don't know that it would be the next best thing.
  2. I thought about that, too. And, as always, the flip side is that there are probably Christian republican supporters unhappy with secular choices. :tongue_smilie: There are some great Christian artists with cross-over songs that would be ideal choices.
  3. I would imagine there are tons of contemporary Christian artists who are republicans and would LOVE the exposure. And I think it would be a huge appeal to their "base".
  4. Radio stations, restaurants, etc. are all supposed to pay ASCAP fees. It is those fees that are used to pay the musicians. Here's a link that explains it in more detail.
  5. There is no difference if it played was once the stage was cleared. If it was being played at the end of the speech while a candidate was still on stage, like a theme song, that gives it a completely different feel. It's no longer background music, it's part of the "show". Pearl Jam was getting royalties through the music association fees that the science center paid. Yet they still were able to have their songs removed from the shows. I'm aware that the RNC wasn't advertising Heart, and that was the point I was making. Musical artists have been fighting this battle for years. It's not as simple as crossing out and initialing a line in a contract. My husband could find Heart's manager's name and number within a couple of hours. I'm guessing someone organizing the RNC could have found it within a few days. :tongue_smilie:
  6.:lol::lol: And no matter what the saleslady tells you, pouring a lemon-flavored oil on it just. doesn't. help.
  7. I've heard of women wanting to get a "W" tattooed on each side of that spout. So that either way you look at it, it says something.
  8. Now Kaylee, we know all about your nethers and batteries. :D:D (I feel like I must add... that's a Firefly reference for those wondering why I called her the wrong name and referred to her nethers...)
  9. Oh, I'm with you on that one! Each kitchen utensil has its very specific purpose. You start using the wrong thing, and your dessert just might fall flat!
  10. Well, legally the RNC had the right to play it. Had it just been background music while the audience was seating themselves, no big deal. If they were using it as a sort of "theme song", then I think it would have made sense for them to get approval. If for no other reason than to avoid this kind of negative publicity. Back when I did laser shows at planetaria, we had to pull any Pearl Jam songs from our shows. But I could understand where were coming from, since we were advertising their name and in a sense making money off of them. Most artists loved it, though. Free publicity, in a way. But it seems the RNC was publicity Heart didn't want to be associated with. I guess when it comes down to it, I don't think it's unreasonable for them to ask that it not be used.
  11. Iced tea is actually pretty enjoyable. You should try it some time. ;)
  12. Right now, at this moment, more than ever before, I am SO glad my husband doesn't read this board. I'm trying to convince him that 2xyear is enough. Your post would totally blow any chance I had of that. I'd be wiping up that mess for months.
  13. Yep. But it's not only about speeding up the process. Sometimes I just want to enjoy some tea by myself, you know? Without having to worry if someone else has enough sugar or milk, or if they need a top up to keep it warm. Tea for two is great, but once in a while, private teatime is a nice little indulgence. :D
  14. It is Philosophy Rocks by Stephen Law. Upon finding it on Amazon to link here, I realized the potentially offensive question wasn't actually on the cover of the book, but was simply the name of a chapter. :glare:
  15. But the library IS a source of information, not only to their children, but to the community. It is completely within any parent's ability to ensure that their children do not access books they don't approve of. It's called going to the library with them. There may be books that I don't want my daughter to read, but I can make that happen without forcing a library to do it for me.
  16. For the first time ever, I got upset with my library system not too long ago. I had checked out a kid's philosophy book, renewed it as many times as possible, and even kept it past its due date and subsequently payed a late fee. About a week after I returned it I tried to put it on hold again. Strangely enough, it wasn't in the online catalog anymore. When I returned to my library I asked them to check on it for me, and come to find out it was "removed from circulation". The librarian said that happens sometimes when a book is in bad shape. This one wasn't. It also happens when a book doesn't get checked out often. This one had been out for weeks and even made late fee income. I believe it was discarded because on the front of the book were philosophical questions, one in particular of a religious nature. And the book didn't answer the question with a resounding YES. (Nor did it any of the other questions. That was the whole point of the book, to get the kid thinking philosophically.) I wished they would have called and offered the book to me. I would have gladly paid for it. OK. Rant over. :glare:
  17. What I love about rep: 1. It's free! I'd love to be more giving IRL, but can't afford it. This is something I can give every day. 2. It's a gift (almost) everyone loves receiving. 3. It's always the right size. No matter how few points you are, or how many, it always fits. 4. How often, IRL, do we get to say, "I knocked you up!!"? 5. You don't get upset if they return their gift. :D
  18. Uhhh.... Even with her reminder, I forgot. :tongue_smilie: I'm such a blond. :D
