I know it is a tad early to be talking about graduation gifts, but I need the help of those who have great creative brain cells (of which I am not one of these people)... we have some very special friends whose first born child (daughter) is graduating from High School in May. I don't want to just get her any gift, but something super special. If it helps, she LOVES books, History and great literature. But she is a very well rounded young gal...not girly at all...and I am just at a loss as to ideas. So, if anybody can help me, I would be grateful!!! Kathy

We use Singapore now, but I started with MUS and the way they explained it made A LOT of sense to my kids...I'll do my best to explain it... there are 3 houses on decimal street...the units house, the tens house and the hundreds house. So if you have the problem 392 - 74 = _____ first I used the base 10 blocks to put the right number of pieces in the right houses....then I would ask, can you take 4 units away from 2 units? No...so then we have to go next door and ask if we can have some visitors today....so "knock knock, Knock...number 10, number 10 can one of you come and play today?"...so then one 10 comes and plays...but only units (or ones) can play in our house, so we need to change the 10 block to 10 units or ones. So, now how many units or ones are here? 12...so now can we take 4 from 12? yes...then..we go to the 10's house...how many are there now? 8 tens...so can we take 8 from 8, yes...can we take 0 hundreds from 3? Yes... did that make a little bit of sense???

working independently
ProudGrandma replied to ProudGrandma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
this is a great idea, except I have tried this and as soon as I am gone...so is he...off to play with toys etc....or he will just sit there and do nothing until I come back. -
I would like to see my 8 year old son work more independently, but I am not sure how to work him in that direction. He CAN do some of the work himself (without me hovering over him), but that would actually require him to READ the directions and the work (and he thinks he will die if he does that alone)....any thoughts on how I can gently encourage him and gain confidence in himself??

That the same 3 kids can be best friends one day and the next day they are the worst enemies on the face of the earth?? I can't for the life of me figure out what is different today than yesterday...but all I know is today I want to give away the very same kids I couldn't get enough of yesterday....UGH!!!!!!!

How do you do lapbooks with two kids?
ProudGrandma replied to Faithr's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I have 3 kids and we have just started lapbooking. At first I thought I would have each one do the same lapbook whenever we would do one...but I just couldn't figure out what would be the purpose of having 3 of everyone we did. So, I decided if we were doing a lapbook along side of a school topic, we would do one lapbook and each child would do part of it. But we have also done lapbooks on topics each child was interested in, they could do a lapbook on that topic...but at any rate, we will only have one lapbook per topic. Much more managable. -
REAL Science OdysseyChemistry - Love it or Hate it?

We haven't used the Chemistry program, but we have used both the Life Science and Earth Science and we love both of those. I hope someone else can speak specifically to the Chemistry for you. -

plastic containers and plastic zippered bags, what do you use to freeze food in? I make extra food all of the time so I have a quick meal when I need it...I simply do not have enough glass containers to keep food in the freezer in..so what would be some healthy alternatives? Kathy

water bottle insulated sleeve
ProudGrandma replied to ProudGrandma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Excellent....perfect...and a great price too...THANKS!!!!!!! -
If I ordered something and it was too late to cancel the order, is it ok, legal, acceptable, etc to just refuse the package and return it without opening it? A couple days ago I ordered water bottles...single walled...thinking I could buy insulated covers cheaply somewhere...haven't found any, and for the regular price of covers, I could have easily bought the double-walled bottles. SO, now I am trying to see if I can still cancel the order, but if I am unable to, I was just wondering what my cheapest options were to fixing my blunder. Thanks.

Do you trust them? I mean, the organic version of Ragu Spaghetti sauce for example. Do you believe them when they say ORGANIC on the label, or are they just trying to sucker us in by making usbelieve it is organic. I have even wondered if they can fake the little USDA ORGANIC sticker on their label. Does anybody have a thought on this???

QUICK...cream cheese question
ProudGrandma replied to ProudGrandma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Oh, it is so easy too.. 1 block of cream cheese softened 2 small cans of tuna--drained 1/4 cup of mayo all mixed together...and that is it. My kids LOVE it on Triscuit crackers, my hubby loves it on homemade bread...today we put it on torilla wraps...and that was good too. It is one of my favorites!!! -
QUICK...cream cheese question
ProudGrandma replied to ProudGrandma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
oops...I already mixed it up and then I thought to ask you guys..is it still ok?? -
I love making a tuna spread that uses soften cream cheese, tuna and mayo. My cream chesse wasn't softened, so I put it in the micro to soften it (my micro has a special button for this)...and the phone rang, and when I came back to check it...the cream cheese was soft (not melted) and sort of warm...can I still use it to make my spread???

I just bought these...I don't even have them yet... stainless steel bottles. bpa free stainless steel. water bottles by hydrasip the company had great bottles for a good price...but no sleeves. and the ones that I have seen are all about $10 each. So if you find some for less, please let me know...I just spent $75 for water bottles...I can't hardly fathom spening another $50 just to cover them and keep the contents cold..UGH!! -

I would really prefer to buy them...I don't sew and by the time I buy the material and pay someone to sew it, I may as well pay $10 for the ones on the web. I guess I was really hoping for cheap ones somewhere.
