  1. It is really cold here and we haven't turned our heat on yet so I know she isn't too hot under the lamp.....she has a blanket on her too. I keep going in to check on her. She is awake but not moving.

You know she is really my Ds's dog. He has had her since he was 4. When we got her his dad was very against her being in the house. So the first night she was in the garage in her crate. At some point in the night ds went out and drug her crate down the hallway to his room. We found her there the next morning.

But he is 16 now and busy with life. He knows the end is near and he just said, 'well mom you knew it was coming'.

I'm glad she has you to look after her so well. I am so sad for her and for you, but I know she is in good hands.

  2. I think the socks are a wonderful idea, Scarlett.

I agree with Stephanie. Just keep her as comfortable as you can and talk to a vet if possible about adjusting her meds. Be careful she doesn't get too hot under the heat lamp, as she might not be able to move away from it at this point. Just be with her and love on her.

  3. I'm so sorry, Scarlett.  So, so sorry.  You are a good doggy mommy, and she knows she's loved.

This is making me all teary.  We're losing our boy right now, and just focused on keeping him comfy and knowing he's loved.  I make his food for him, and right now he seems content just being with us, but we will be thinking of making that appt soon, too, and reading your pain ... I just want to hug you, and tell you you're not alone.   :grouphug:

I'm so sorry, Spryte. I had to say goodbye to my boy about two years ago and know how difficult it is. Huge  :grouphug:  :grouphug:  :grouphug: .

  4. With a skin thing that's not clearing, I'd be wondering if you're looking at something fungal though....

I'm wondering about this, too, because antibiotics could make a fungal infection worse (possibly steroids, too, if they lowered her immunity). Fungal infections can also be very painful.

I'm surprised the vet hasn't done a culture already. You might want to ask for one, Scarlett, if you can manage to get and keep your dog's pain under control. I'm pretty sure my dog once had to take oral medication for a fungal skin infection.

  5. Is it the grass specifically that hurts her feet or just walking? If it's the grass, can you find a soft patch of soil for her to use instead? IDK, just a thought.

Does the sedative seem to help with the pain? If so, maybe you should continue giving it regularly until you can get to the vet. I always think of that Herriot story in which he deliberately kept a dog sedated for several days to give her a chance to sleep and heal. I wonder if you could give enough sedative to help her sleep through the night and put a diaper on her if necessary.

Please keep us updated as you can. The poor baby. It's so hard, I know.

  6. this is what my daughter already uses...and it sort of works...but I am actually wondering if they would work better, if she used her regular towel first to sort of dry her hair.

Does she use the microfiber Turbie Twists or the terry ones? The terry ones don't work for my long hair at all, but the microfiber ones do.

I used an Aquis towel for years, but found the microfiber Turbie ones work just as well. I didn't want to shell out $20 for a single towel again!

  7. It's pretty obvious to me. We live in a neighborhood. It is part of nature for animals to eat other animals, but it isn't something we see very often. So... novelty. It is also sort of funny to see a usually stupid and lazy bird who has been our pet for 2 years become the predator she was meant to be. As in "woah! Look at Brownie go! Who knew she had it in her!"

Also, I hate mice. They keep finding ways into our house. One even found its way into our van and ate through 2 car seats. Another was under my bed. I'm waging war with those disgusting creatures and if I can give my chicken a treat at the same time, all the better.

I can't help but feel that your post was condescending. There is a lot of precedence for enjoying watching animals eat smaller animals. Every nature documentary ever, feeding times posted at the zoo, etc. You are welcome to your feelings, but I won't feel bad for mine.

Thank you for your thoughtful response.

Yes, animals kill each other and all kinds of unpleasant things occur in nature. It was the apparently gleeful (haha, smiley faces) enjoyment of the mice's suffering that I found disrespectful.

Yes, there is a lot of precedence for enjoying watching animals suffer. Bull fights, dog fights, and (some) hunting all come to mind. Precedence doesn't make it right.

I have sympathy for you in regards to your mouse problem. I personally do like mice, but not in my house. We have always used live traps in homes in which we were living. I have used snap traps in a home we were selling, because I wasn't able to check live traps daily and it would have been more cruel to let the mice starve than to kill them quickly.

We likely have plenty of areas of agreement outside of this issue! I just felt that the way in which you were speaking of the animals' deaths was unkind, so I spoke up. If it's necessary to kill another creature, it seems best to do it in the least stressful and least painful way possible. That's my take on it, anyway.

  8. Well, born and raised in the south and I didn't know until I was well into my 30s that it was offensive to call a black child climbing on anything a monkey.

I admit that my husband also had to explain this to me when I was in my 30's. I was uneducated about racism and unaware that this particular insult was even a thing. :(

I appreciate this conversation. Thanks to you all for hanging in there.

  9. Here's an example. Your 10 yo DD with sensory issues is finishing her outdoor activity at camp when her brother gets sick. You end up at the ER with the 10 yo DD, her 5yo brother and her 2yo sister. Your 10yo is dirty, sweaty and is wearing uncomfortable clothes (which normally she doesn't tolerate well and tries to change out of her dirty clothing and take a shower ASAP). She gives her snacks to her siblings and she entertains them for 6 hours while at the ER. The moment she comes home, at 11pm, she gets upset at something innocuous and has a full blow screaming fit.

Do you understand why a 10 year old would have a fit over seemingly nothing, in the above circumstances?

Do you think most people understand?

Would your DH understand? (Could you ask?)

What would you tell to a person who doesn't understand? Can this be explained?

    Yes.

I'm not sure. I've been blessed with a perceptive and understanding family.

    Yes.

I agree with SparklyUnicorn. It just doesn't seem that odd to me that someone might lose emotional control after a stressful day, especially a young child with sensory issues.

  10. Blind tasting comparisons are fascinating!

Does anyone else remember the original Pepsi Challenge taste tests?  :)

    Wikipedia says:

"In his book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005), author Malcolm Gladwell presents evidence that suggests Pepsi's success over Coca-Cola in the 'Pepsi Challenge' is a result of the flawed nature of the 'sip test' method. His research shows that tasters will generally prefer the sweeter of two beverages based on a single sip, even if they prefer a less sweet beverage over the course of an entire can. When the preference in blind tests is compared to tests wherein cups are labeled with arbitrary labels (e.g., S or L) or brand names, the ratings of preference change."

  11. Reminds me of Melanie Griffith's childhood lion. of course it's a terrible idea to do this, but it is funny how times change and/or people get away with things because they are celebrities. Not only were Melanie's parents not arrested, I think there were magazine articles about it. The photos she has from that time are crazy.

I have to admit that even though I vehemently disagree with keeping wild animals as pets, I love those pictures. The maid stepping over the lion in the kitchen--oh, my!

Melanie's mom Tippi Hendren (of The Birds fame) has been involved in animal rights activism for many years now and runs Shambala Preserve for big cats. She said in an interview, "I cringe when I see those pictures now. I have to tell you we were stupid beyond belief. We should never have taken those risks. These animals are so fast, and if they decide to go after you, nothing but a bullet to the brain will stop them."

  12. I love buying handmade items, and I know we have some Etsy sellers here on the forum. With the holidays coming up, I thought this would be great time to showcase the work of the artisans and crafters in our forum community.

If you have an Etsy shop or other shop featuring handmade items and are willing to post the link in this thread, please do so!  :)

(Just FTR, I am not artsy, not crafty, and am not selling anything myself. Mods, if this thread is not acceptable, please delete it.)

ETA: If you would prefer that your store not be linked to your WTM profile due to privacy concerns, PM the link to me and I'll post it here.
