Duolingo vs. Rosetta Stone

I've decided to do the same. . . give Duolingo a try. I mean you can't beat free, especially when so many people say it is either similar to or better than Rosetta Stone. In talking with my husband, we've decided to go with Duolingo and then if it isn't giving us the results we're looking for, we'll move on to Rosetta Stone or something else. -
My daughter is in 5th grade this year and we are looking to start Spanish with her. Has anyone tried Duolingo?? If so, has there been success with actually speaking Spanish and not just learning vocabulary words? Is Rosetta Stone the better option as far as long term success with learning a foreign language??? The thing is this: in the next few days, my husband and I were going to purchase Rosetta Stone for learning Spanish (big $$$ investment!). I just came across Duolingo today, and of course it is FREE. . . big difference, right?!? But is it the better choice??

This is pretty much what I've decided to do, too. I'm using a few Janice VanCleave books, along with the science encyclopedias I already have on hand. I'm going to follow the 2-day schedule and see how it goes. I think what was throwing me for a loop was all of the separate purchases to be made for various kits to do experiments with. I think I'll purchase just a couple of those kits to use as "special science projects", but I just don't see myself purchasing things all school year long. I don't have that kind of cash! :laugh:

Looking through the forums, I see so many different curriculum choices for 5th grade science. I am SO undecided about what to do for my 5th grader's science. I like the idea presented by the WTM (scientific method, experiments, etc.), but I don't like that every thing we're supposed to do isn't already pulled together. There are so many various resources listed, plus experiment kits, that I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. . . Has anyone ever done 5th grade Biology according to the WTM?? If so, how did it go for you??

I am *still* trying to finalize plans for 5th grade biology. I love the ideas from the WTM on how to do it, however, I'd much prefer everything to be compiled in one place for ease of use. I ran across Christian Kids Explore biology, which is a part of a classic science program. However, I am not sure if it is "rigorous" enough for my daughter. For those who have used it, do you feel it is appropriate for the Logic Stage? Or is it best suited for Grammar? **SIGH** I can't believe how undecided and unsettled I feel about selecting science curriculum this year!

I am considering Elemental Science (Biology) for use with my 5th grader. I was wondering, do I absolutely need to purchase the encyclopedias listed for the text? Or, can I use the science encyclopedias I have on hand and assign reading from those, based upon the topics covered in the student guide? I appreciate the more structured/pulled-together approach layed out by Elemental Science, rather than the way 5th grade Biology is presented in WTM. However, I am working on a tight budget. I have the Usborne Internet-linked Science Encyclopedia that we barely used from 3rd grade and I'm wondering if I can put it to use now. Input is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!

The WTM recommends that if you're using Rod & Staff for grammar, then the composition assignments included are enough to fufill the writing needed. Has anyone used Rod & Staff only??? Has anyone paired Rod & Staff with a writing curriculum??? I'm just wondering if Rod and Staff is enough on its own, or if I need to supplement?

We've worked up to this point and my daughter is also a natural speller. So, since we're not having any trouble so far, my thinking is that I might not need it either. Thanks for your response!!!! -
For those of you who use Spelling Workout (from Modern Curriculum Press), have you ever purchased the Teacher's Manual? If so, at what level did you need it? How much does it add to the lessons vs. just using the student books alone? My daughter is about to begin Level F and I'm just wondering if I should spend the extra $$ for the teacher's edition. Thanks!

For you Mystery of History lovers. . .What do you use when you are finished with the 3rd volume, since the 4th volume is unavailable at this time????? My 5th grader will start the 3rd year of the history cycle this coming school year. (I've chosen to keep her on the same track as her sister who is beginning 3rd grade. We just started homeschooling 2 years ago.) Anyway, I really appreciate MOH's approach, but I'm not sure I want to begin with it for my 5th grader if I can't continue on with it for the next year. Also, how well does MOH lend itself to the outlining process that the WTM describes for the logic stage??? Thanks!

Yeah, My Father's World teamed up with Dorling Kindersley and removed the millions of years portion in the History of the World. (You can find it here.) Even so, it does not start with Creation, but rather "Early People" starting at 40,000 BC.

I am about to start 5th grade with my daughter. I was looking for a Christian alternative to the National Geographic Almanac of World History. I love the idea of outilining and I think the WTM's approach will fit us. However, I do not agree with the National Geographic approach to origins (ie. millions of years, prehistoric man, etc.) I know that I could just skip those portions. But, I'd rather have a Christian (Creation) approach that is formatted similarly to the National Geographic, so that I can use the WTM's suggestion of outilining. I hope this makes sense. Any thoughts?

Hello all. I'm looking for a history of the world curriculum with a Christian worldview, especially for timeline dating purposes. I am considering this curriculum for my 5th grader. We've used SOTW before and I feel that it is time for her to move on to something a bit more challenging/in-depth. I consider MOH, but am concerned that the 4th volume is not complete yet, because I do like to follow the 4 year history cycle. Any suggestions?????

I purchased Biblioplan for the Ancients (to use with SOTW 1) simply because of its heavy inclusion of Bible History. Now moving on to the Middle Ages (SOTW 2), I'm wondering how necessary it is to have Biblioplan for other years. Does anyone know if Biblioplan Middle Ages offers substantially more Biblical info./reading suggestions than using SOTW 2 alone? Thanks!

Has anyone used Biblioplan for the Middle Ages? If so, what are your thoughts? Does it jump around the way Biblioplan for the Ancients does? Or does it follow the SOTW chapter for chapter? I'm trying to figure out if I want to use it for year 2 or not. Also, do you all use the SOTW activity pages or Biblioplan's? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.
