  1. Yeah, I saw that. If I search on something like "world history", it comes up with hundreds of entries, then I have to click on each one to see "where" it is (such as -------school). I was hoping for something easier. Thanks anyways. Hot Lava Mama
  2. I was looking at a web site that discusses the a-g requirements for University of California. I would like to find a listing of courses that meet those objectives. However, to do a search, you have to know specifics like the school name or online publisher. Is there a way to search, for example, on "world history" and have a listing of publishers that would meet this requirement? I was hoping to just list the requirements so I could take a look at all the providers that meet that requirement and then choose among those courses. Any help is very much appreciated! Hot Lava Mama
  3. And this breakfast consists of _____________________? Please fill in the blank! :) Hot Lava Mama
  4. Who gives the ACT exam? I don't see it on the College Board, so I assume they do not give the test. Does anyone have a web site where I can see a local place that administers the ACT, as well as when it is given, etc. Also, is it o.k. to take "practice" exams for the ACT that don't count towards college entrance. ie: ds took a practice PSAT this last October at a local high school to see where he was and how much he needed to study. What is the general consensus for the ACT? Take lots of practice ones to get the highest score or wait until he has studied as hard as he can an then take a try at it? Any other information is greatly appreciated. Hot Lava Mama
  5. Awesome! I knew the hive would come through! :) Hot Lava Mama Thanks so much!
  6. I have e-mailed Chalkdust twice to no avail. Perhaps the hive can help us with this problem: FYI, this is the 5th edition Geometry book used by Chalkdust, chapter 2.5, problem 33: Question: Find the measure of each acute interior angle of a regular pentagram. First, can someone clarify that there is a difference between a pentaGON versus a pentaGRAM. My understanding is that the pentaGRAM is made by extending the sides of a pentaGON so that it looks star shaped. Is that correct? Second, the chapter only goes over how to calculate the pentaGON interior angles ((I - (n-2) x 180) / n). I don't think this works for the problem they are asking. Does anyone know the formula for the pentaGRAM? BTW, the correct answer is: 36. They don't show how to calculate it, they just give the answer. :( Hot Lava Mama
  7. That's not it. It's some kind on thing like those K-nex or those Uber things. But those aren't it. They are really popular, but I can't remember the name.
  8. What is the name of that building toy that people use to build examples of molecules or cells or elements or something like that? Hot Lava Mama
  9. Oh my. Can I borrow your brain for a while? I will return it once all my kids are through high school! Thanks for the information. I think I need to try to pre-read a portion before him so I can figure out how to discuss it with him. Regentrude makes a good case about having a discussion rather than a set of standard questions. Off to read! :) Thanks to everyone who gave such thoughtful answers. I appreciate it! Hot Lava Mama
  10. Do you ever run into answers like "I don't know". How do you get the questions out of them? I tried this on an earlier Great Book, and he felt overwhelmed and didn't really know what to discuss. I have a book with some Socratic questions, do you use questions like that? :)
  11. Thanks for the help. Do you know of any source that I could use to start drafting some questions to Great Books as we make our way through high school. I have not read them (not required in my high school), so I am reading them at the same time as he is. I would like to have a well crafted topic before he starts reading so he can be thinking about it as he reads. I feel like I am behind the ball with figuring out what to do for essays. While we are reading Great Books (much more than I was required to do in high school), I would like to expand his education to analysis of those books. Help. Struggling! :)
  12. Ds (9th grade) is reading this. How can I figure out a great writing assignment to go with this book. Any suggestions on what to do? :) Hot Lava Mama
  13. Cut yourself some slack. Nobody in their right mind expects you to be on time with that many little ones. I know because I was there! Mine are getting bigger, but we still have to "leave" 15 minutes before the actual time I need my wheels rolling. If you lighten up on yourself, perhaps it won't be so stressful and the kids won't feed on your stress. If your late, so what. I, too, am a type A who HATES being late (I have always considered it a moral flaw!), but I have learned that most everyone doesn't really care that much, and almost everyone excuses you when you have little ones. ;) Good luck. 14. Oh my, oh my, oh my. My head hurts for you. Ugh-a-rific!
  15. Thanks for the information. My heart goes out to you with two drivers! My next one is two more years away. I will look at something like what you are doing. Sounds better than going the DMV route. :)
  16. We will have a new driver next year. :driving: :scared: Male driver. OMG!!!! I can't even think about our auto insurance rates. Anyhow, any suggestions on a good drivers ed class? Perhaps it depends on the state requirements? I don't know. I can't even wrap my head around this one. Way too crazy! Any ideas on how I can find something that is good? Hot Lava Mama
  17. "Dream Home?" Well, considering I just saw a flyer for a house close by us...it would be a "dream home", mostly because there is no way on earth we could ever afford it. It is Eddie Murphy's old home. It's 13,000 sq feet with a 5,500 sq foot "guest home". It's incredibly beautiful! Home gym, basketball court, etc. It overlooks Folsom Lake and has over $1 million in landscaping. Plus, it comes with the custom furniture built for the home and a rare piano in which there are only 14 in existence! I told my kids that if we had that house, they could all live there with us after they were married and had kids. Each kid could have their own "wing"! :0 That would be heaven! :)
  18. What type of paper would you assign to a 9th grader for Aristophanes "Birds"? His last paper was a critique, so I was hoping to do something different. If you think it should be a "persuasive" paper, could you help with some suggestions on possible thesis statements? Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  19. I didn't know this. Can you suggest some good ones for "possible" STEM focus? Thanks! :) Hot Lava mama
  20. that several organizations are trying to organize? Also, what do you think about the proposal to break California up into 5 or 6 individual states? Hot Lava Mama
  21. Dd (7th grade) grammar book. Question: Indicate if there is a indirect object. "Raul gave a ring to Audra." She correctly identified "Raul" as the subject, "gave" as the verb, and "ring" as the direct object. She wants to identify "Audra" as the indirect object. Here's the catch. We have been using the phrase "for/to whom" to find the I.O. (Raul ...gave...ring...for(to) whom) She said that "Audra" answers that question. I want to make sure I am telling her correctly why "Audra" isn't the I.O. First, my understanding is that the I.O. has to be between the verb and D.O. Is that correct? Second, since "to Audra" is a prepositional phrase, it can't be any of the "main parts" of the sentence. Is that correct? If both my points are correct, it would seem that the question "for whom" isn't fool proof. Any suggestions or insights would be welcome! Thanks Hot Lava Mama
