  1. I know with Apologia you need to complete Chemistry before Adv Bio. My dd wanted to do it and we received this advice from two different teachers so we are doing Chemistry for tenth. But she has completed Alg 1.

I would ask though about the Chemistry. The Bio suggested she be enrolled in Alg 1 simultaneously with biology yet we found absolutely no Algetbra in Biology whatsoever.

The Physical Science from Apologia has a few Physics modules and Earth sceince in it and you could do that.

  2. I was so worried about this too and could have written this myself a few months ago. Someone suggested I join a yahoo group hs2college and it has opened my eyes. I was amazed at how many high rated colleges and ivy that hs kids are being accepted to with a mommy transcript. I just had my eyes opened regarding this and that it did not matter in the end.

I guess if it is just high school accepting them later that is your concern maybe that is different. have you thought about starting at a community college if it came to that rather than ending up back in public school?

  3. I am trying to order books on CD from the library- we love to listen as a family while we are driving around on vacation. I see some threads with least favorites but how about your most favorites. Our dc are dd almost 15 and ds 13.

And please note if you have listened to them, not everything is available that way. Here is a list of some of what I am considering.

    Pride and Prejudice

    David Copperfield

    Robinson Crusoe

    Swiss Family Robinson

    Oliver Twist

    Watership Down

    Treasure island

    Silas Marner

    Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

    jane Eyre

    Redwall

    the Call of the Wild

    Paradise Lost

    the Yearling

    The Hiding Place

    We have heard already;

    anything...Anne of Green Gables

    To Kill A Mockingbird

    All of Narnia

    A Wrinkle in Time

    Beric the Briton

    A Basket of Flowers

    Harry Potter

    The Cat of Bubastes

    Tom Sawyer

    the Light in the Forest

Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry

    pippi Longstocking

    Johnny Tremain

    Old Yeller

    Charlie and Choclate factory

    The Indian in the Cupboard

    Beowulf

the list is much longer and I keep editing as I think of them, but this is a good start.

  4. I agree, I know many college students (including my 43 yrd old sister) who read the texts the summer before, especially the vocabulary.

They want to be familar with the words so when they hear them in lectures they have a clue what is being spoken about. I would not put a non science kid in a cc class without some prior knowledge- not fair to child. They will be in over their head too quick. Even the posts here the kids were science before who had success. Of course I am sure there are kids who would do well, but IMHO it is not worth the risk.

  5. I notice that the placement exams for Eng 1 and 2 are readily accessible and I believe for Narnia as well. You could view those to start. Apparently the teacher gives an exam for Eng 3.

the forums are accessed from the studyplace which you need to go into your family account to get to. Perhaps you could contact the administrator to assign you one- or ask if there is another way to view the forums?

When I read them I got the feeling some students didn't think it was as worthwhile as some of the other English courses. I would want you to read it for yourself though- I do not want to mislead you.

  6. Yes that is what I understand-but you could ask. Dd is finishing Eng 2 now and trying to not have too much to revise.

Here is how it works this year. You submit a rough draft. Teacher reviews and gives helpful tips and problems to address. Peer from class then reviews and gives 3 praises and 3 suggestions.

child reviews and makes changes, fills out rubric and submits it with final copy. then grade is assigned.

From what I hear Eng 3 is only 1 copy for grading. I know my dd struggled with feeling like she was in a below grade class, but there was a 15 and 16 yr old in there with her! It is different to write this way if you have not done so.

  7. Well the easiest thing to do...what I wish I had done is preview the placement tests. They are all right on the website and you can open and view it without enrollment. The difficult thing is you are not supposed to help your child at all- so it really is right where they are at, no review. They do this to properly place your child.

TPS teaches writing according to current fashion which involves a very limited use of be verbs. Is, Am, Are, Was, Were, Be, Been, Being.

Additionally in Eng 2 as the year progresses trying to cut down on pronouns and not using A, An or But, using different sentence starters etc. It is all on the website. I never did view the test for English 3, but the test for Narnia was quite detailed. Dd wrote easily and did use limited "be" verbs but she needed to do much bible quoting in her paper, it was required.

The information she did not have was that the be verbs in quotes were not counted as the total- I think she could have only five. Trying to find bible quotes without "be" verbs was cumbersome and made for a paper that did not flow well and using zero "be" verbs in her own writing, as they were needed for her verses.

I am not meaning to come across as all being negative- I like how much her writing has improved this year. However, that one piece of info may have changed her placement. Then again, it may have been too hard for her to adjust without going thru Eng 2.

Additionally TPS has the student fill out a rubric of sorts. You self analyze your finished paper final copy and filling it out makes you go through and are sure you have different sentence starters, limited be verbs, different sentence types etc.

Please ask away, it is helpful to know. However, do look at the placement exams and see where your child fits- and do not worry about grade level. TPS wants them to have a positive first experience and not be in over their heads.

  8. My dd is in Apologia Biology this year and "LOVES " it. She found her love. We are contiuning with AA next year with their other teachers for Chemistry. Dd is signed up with Rusty Hughes.

I like AA better than some other on line classes as you have audio and visual. Veritas has only a chat box you look at and my dd would not do weel in that. I do not know about Memoria.

Mr Rosenoff will continue his class with red Wagon on his own. My dd likes him a lot, but some have a hard time with his personality. It is def worth trying a modu;le for the 30 to see if you like him. If you do, he probably still has openings.

  9. My dd is in ninth and tried to get into the narnia class last year. She did not know about quotes being not included in the "be" verb count so they placed her in English 2- I am sure that might not have been all but we did not receive the test back.

I cannot say she loves it as it was really pretty easy for her, but she did learn some things and it was gentle. I liked it for her because she was introduced to TPS ways and that can take some getting used to. It does lack vocabulary skills if you end up there for ninth, if I did it again I would supplement.

They have revamped their system to not include grade levels. My dd has Ms Shearon and she does connect with boys well.

I have my son signed up for TPS Eng 2 for the fall, he is in eighth. Dd is signed up for her year long wait for Narnia! After that we will def. do Adv Comp as I hear that is best in 11th for SAT writing.

    Kathy

  10. I do not blame you for wanting to own them. With one renewal and being that the books are short- not big books at all didn't need them long. TPS has many comprehension questions that go with each book- and you will have to correct them, and then submit your childs grade, so you do kind of read them then. I did not end up reading Miracle Worker but could not put animal farm down. The politics are amazing to see.

I guess for us, that it would have kinda ruined it if we had already read them, made sort of uneventful and boring so just my two cents word of warning. It would be different if you were talking Narnia or Lord of the Rings or something like that.

My son is taking Eng 2 with TPS next year as an eighth grade 13yo. DD wanted narnia to begin with so she will be in that instead of Eng 3. Ms frederick sems like a darling so you will be in good shape there.

  11. some of these sound good- the books mentioned in particular. maybe I was not clear though, the speech and debate is awesome, I have seen how it helps with oral speaking skills. This is not the issue though, I generally am very verbal and my kids are as well. that is why I did not worry about this. We have judged a few speech and debates so we have seen the benefits first hand. I do not think that will prepare you though for relationship problem solving. Eithier with close friends, spouses or even your boss. It may help you land a job, but what about keeping it? Sometimes great speakers look great but how about their personal life?

the kids are good writers- so that is not eithier. I know these things have great value, please do not think I am slighting them, that is not the heart of what I am getting at.

Close intimate freidnship help, resolving issues, compromising, getting your feelings heard, developing good listening skills rather than trying to "WIN" a fight. But being balanced enough to not be walked on as well. kwim?

    Kathy

  12. How can you? I want to teach my kids this as a skill- and I admit it is passed on, so if I am lacking I am passing this on to them.

What sort of thing have you done to foster these skills. A book to read- a curricula with discussion? It seems we need to be both good listeners and speakers to be successful and that this may be much more important than I have realized. Especially now with two teenagers it is apparent- and they do not always want to hear it:tongue_smilie:.

Some of their friendships are struggling. Is this normal with your teenagers? My kids to not have a lot of electronics. only emergency cell, no facebook etc. It seems the teenagers are not communicating the same way as before this stuff?

  13. We did Eng 2 this year and it was my dd first TPS course. We have found it not near as much work as I thought it would be. The papers get a first draft and also a peer review so it is very gentle.

DD spends about 3 hours per week tops in addition to the class time. Becuase TPS placed here there and she is in ninth grade, I wish we would have supplemented- as you say with vocabulary. there is some, but it is light. I would add that in, but not sure what grade yours is in.

As a side we just borrowed Aniaml farm and Miracle worker from the lib

  14. Not sure if you are pro or con apologia, but My son is doing Apologia Physical this year- there is quite a bit of math in some modules but not the first half of the book. he does like it- but he is in seventh and taking it slow, will finish next year. My dd did Apologia Academy online Biology this year and will do the Chem next.

    Kathy

  15. My dd is finishing 9th and we are still struggling with the forgn lang issue. She did Latin prep 1 this year and she likes it. I understand many colleges will not accept this though. She wants to do Hebrew but I am still trying to find a good fit for her to do that. Meantime trying to figure our next year. I was thinking she could do latin prep 2 next year and then take the national latin exam and do two years of hebrew for 11/12....or whatever else is decided.

Is Latin prep 2 ok? What test would she be ready for next Jan? when the test is taken?

    Any other ideas after LP1?

    Thank,

    kathy

  16. We wacth the video together and pause and discuss. Additionally all the notes of what is in the video are also in the course notes so to me that is the extra- you can see the samples worked out.

We have called the helpline only once so far and the man spent a TON of time with my daughter (30 minutes or more) and he identified what lesson was tripping her up and we went back. We should use the helpline more than we do.

My daughter started this program late after failing out of MUS (not enough teaching) Key to Series and Life of Fred. She is in 9th this year and made it to module E now. She repeated module D twice and now is better with it. We will finish in the fall this year and start Geometry

My son is in 7th this year and I had him start. he has done module A and B, I made him repeat B to make sure he has it. He is finishing it now. I figure he can easily just do 2-3 modules per year and still be done in 9th with Algebra 2- if if your child does the same and finishes in 10th that is terrific as this course really is all the algebra in the world.

    Kathy

    PS

Tom will usually tell you to do hald the problems one day and half the next. For my daughter who is in the harder module now this works well. Your child or you will know if you even want to Tom will tell you do just do half and move on if it is really easy.
