  1. My dd is currently thinking of going for her R.N. and then continuing for her N.P afterwards. From what I have heard nursing programs are difficult to get into. It seems harder as perhaps you get in as a freshmen where as going pre-med you attend where you want probably without too much difficulty and your grades prove out your admitance to medical school.

Her SAT scores are pretty good, but not stellar (1950), she will take the Biology SAT II and another in October.

Anyone gone down this road and can offer advice?

Also, it appears she could go as a Biology major and then do an 18-24 month follow-up to gain her NP status, but need clarification.

    Thanks,

    Kathy

  2. Yes, and some privates need this too. I have a friend whose child scored in the 2300 range on the SAT, but is going to college in New York. New York requires a GED for everyone.

This child was offered a full ride, but last minute- a few weeks ago, after all was done and he is heading there in August, they called to say they needed him to do this!

Obviously, with his SAt score this is silly, but still that is what they are requiring him to do. :tongue_smilie:

  3. Hmmm, yes I am starting to see how retaking the SAT might be good. It will be her third time, but with colleges now allowing highest score and such maybe that will be okay.

I am daunted at how to raise her score though. Can you advise on this- I cannot help her so I need something. We did the SAT DVD last year in Math and she liked it, not sure what is going wrong though and we wont have long to fix it only a month or two.

She did Videotext for hs if that helps.

  4. We had a plan.....but you know the story. We wanted to take the SAT in May and Biology SAT II in June. DD had strep and retook the SAT in June. She fared well for our family and we are happy with the results, except occasionally dd hears about all the kids who do exceptionally well and wonders. Still she does not really want to have to retake it. She received a 1950- her low score though is math at 590.

She really wants to still take the SAT II for Biology as she is considering nursing- but is unsure. I would like not to load her down too much so she has time to complete the college applications etc.

We are thinking she could take the SAT II in Math along with the Biology in October and colleges would see this boost? And then she would have time to make the applications. She will need to study for the math to really raise her score and would prefer to focus her time on these items, her classes and figuring out college.

Maybe I just need someone to tell me I am not missing something and that this makes sense? :tongue_smilie:

  5. We have struggled with these issues from time to time, but have gotten by, but dd insisted this year she go to prom. She is a junior and 16 and really wanted to go. The ps said no, however they offered that she can attend as a guest. She is on swim team and could have done this, but here is how it worked out.

She meet a boy in her online class and let's say they decided they would like to attend a prom (even though he was 7 hours away). As I said, the first try was a our local school, but we decided against it for various reasons you can imagine.

We started researching home school proms and they were several that popped up throughout the country. We found a good one that has done it for years within one hour of his home. We all travelled down and stayed a few days and they went to the prom there.

They had skyped, but never met in person. Most people think we are crazy, but thought it might be better received here.

They had a truly wonderful time and now his family is coming up to our place. :D

I would never have seen this coming when we started high school!

  6. Would anyone care to post a usable version of theirs-or the example shared on that yahoo group hs2college?

I have the Transcript Pro, but not the syllabus or DVDs just the software. It is okay, but I would like other options that you can see easier. It looks like I can spend another $30-80 to get more info, but would like not to have to do that.

Anyone willing to share their winning transcript?:001_smile:

  7. dd wants to do a consumer/business math type of program. She has done Algebra 1 and 2 and Geometry already and does not plan to go into a math at college so I think it should be fine.

I think that I had a half credit each in hs in business and consumer math. I am stumped on how to fill that so we are trying to build our own.

She will also be taking an online Economics course that has you invest in the stock market with fict. money and that certainly has some math but not sure I could list it as such. I also want/need to sort of build her personal finance education as well. She may need an eye-opener on money and choosing a career that pays and the paying for college front:tongue_smilie:.

I am thinking of the Dave ramsey stuff- perhaps the adult version. This child has good SAT scores and wants to apply to decent colleges so I do not want to list something that may hurt her.

I am open to other ideas for 12th grade math?

    Thanks for your help,

    Kathy

  8. I think one should explore an understanding of world economics to get the whole picture before they embark on college. College will never be a gurantee that you will have a job. There is much more that goes into building a solid employee than that. Some degrees are very job specific and others are more open-ended. Our dc may switch so it is hard to know at the start where they will end up.

For this reason, one book I am having my daughter read as part of a business type class is Midas Touch. I may not agree with it all, some parts are light and others heavier, but one part really put in writing how much the government has to do with making the world go round so to speak. A friend asked me to read it as she embarks on her own business and I was hesitant, but am glad I did.

I am slowly trying to build out additional books on business, so they can understand the greater importance of having the piece of paper. In my work, about the only thing it says to our hiring dept is if they have a degree they should be teachable. An interview will let them know if their personality makes them teachable or not.

These types of components in a person, if they are entreprenurial in spirit or teachable as an employee will help them flesh out how they want to live their life and that is important to their success and happiness. The college degree is not the be-all-end-all gurantee for success and happiness in life. With dd applying this year I have to remember that I also want to have a happy well-adjusted adult in the end. ;)

  9. Hmmm, this thread is interseting and I like the OP question. My dd will be applying this fall, but as my husband and I are not college educated we question things very differently. We have done quite well and have well paid jobs, in fact (humbly I state) more than many of our college educated friends. We read a lot and can certainly hold conversation about many varied topics.

I never pondered the idea that things like cooking and budgeting would be learned in college, as they are learned quickly when you leave home. Maybe this is another rant but perhaps school/colleges should do a better job of teaching budgeting- the country would be much better off :tongue_smilie:. And sadly a lot of the problems stem from the college educated crew- perhaps that problem is alluded to when you consider some of the mentioned ivy educations.

We married at 20, built our own home and moved in by 22, and have been married for 25 years. We both took one or two college evening classes we thought would be eithier interesting or valuable in our mid-twenties.

We have planned our dc homeschool education so that they can be prepared to live life without college, but with the hope they will attend. Her senoir year willl include a business course (entreprenurial type books) for this purpose. We do this because so many start and never finish. The stats on college graduation rates are scary considering the cost. I imagine maybe when it takes six years, the funds are gone or life begins to move on with love and marriage. I have a few friends who were short a course or two and tried to go back only to find they would have to start all over again. Very sad and to me ethically questionable.

I know it is a different world and a degree is beneficial, that is why I want my dd to attend. We have always prepared her for this and she has an excellent work ethic and very good SAT scores that should serve her well in getting into a good school. However, I think there still may be roadblocks along the way, life will likely get in the way- why else do so many start and never finish.

Without seriously pondering the why and the benefits, we do our children a diservice for they too may face quitting one day and noone wants that;). That is why this is an important question to consider. We speak a lot about the importance of her to be diligent in attaining the degree in four years for this very reason. Her db is watching on.

  10. This is dd last year and there is still so much more I would like her to be exposed to.:) We have followed her likes and that has been nice, but with college/career choices looming it would be good to have some knowledge of pscyh.

I like the sound of Myers text but can it be done lightly in one semester? She wants to take some other classes that have filled her schedule but she may have one semester open.

If not Myers, perhaps some good books that would give her an overview. This may make more sense and now that I write it out may be a better question.

    Thanks as always everyone,

    Kathy

  11. I have my son signed up at TPS in an architecture course- I did not know they had one until recently. The course gives you a 13 month subscptn to CADD which from what I have heard is the premier software used in Architecture and I believe Mechanical drawing.

TPS has two courses using CADD and the teacher correspondence is very intriguing and he sounds wonderful. We signed up to start this fall based on a friends ds who took the other course this past year and loved it. They will build amazing things using the software which should help them know if they love that kind of thing or not.

    Kathy

  12. I have to second TPS. We have taken English 2, English 3, Narnia Literature and Advanced Comp. My dd who finished advanced comp this year had zero anxiety taken the writing section of the SAT as it was not a stress to her at all--- as they had done it all year. She pulled a 730 in the writing section so we are pleased with the results. Both are taking additional writing this year as well.

English 2 is for us IMHO a better start as it has literature, writing, grammar and a big poetry component that even ds who did not want to do thrived in. You really do not need to add to this and the cost is just slightly over budget at I think $450 per year.

  13. Does anyone have anything good to say about any of the SL Government/Civics books? I see a lot of threads but with so many different views presented it is still baffling me what I might do.

DD is going to be in 12th grade and has already done the HSLDA Con Law course and will be also be doing TPS Economics this coming year likely with Dave Ramsey personal finance as well- I do not want/need to overlap. I think she will just need to go over overall basic government, right?

    Here are some options I am considering;

    1. I could weed down the SL course and just do the Gov/Civics section, perhaps adding a book or two of my choosing. The Basic American Government has good topics listed-did anyone like this- it would seem to fill the need on its own-but see non-specific negative reviews- can anyone digress? The other main books would be Never Before In History and maybe adding in National Bestseller.....We Still hold These Truths; Rediscovering our principles recovering our Future. I own all these now.

    2. I am considering A Noble Experiment, but would like more specific reviews regarding his thinking/style. Also how long per day and full year or half- would like half. This needs to be done on her own, without my time.

    3. TPS course using Erich Pratt (sp) Recipe for Freedom. I believe this is a one semester course, so she would do economics first semester and this second semester. It looks good but need reviews.

    Her twelfth grade schedule is starting to get heavy and with college apps looming am trying to avoid that. Here is what we have on schedule thus far;

    TPS Creative Writing

    TPS Spanish 2

    TPS Economics first semester

    Red Wagon Physics

    Ramsey finance/consumer math

Patrick Henry Theology I-----not sure about this maybe semseter 2 and have college apps scheduled- hmmm maybe different post on this. :tongue_smilie:

As always I cannot wait to hear your reviews,

    Kathy

  14. I have been looking at the College board more closely and I notice some of the schools require 2-3 years of social studies. Can we please review what would be acceptable course name for that? I was surprised to see the varied requirements regarding history and social studies.

I apprecaite your help- especially those that have gone down this road before. :bigear:

    Thanks,

    Kathy

  15. has anyone used this and can share their likes/dislikes it- I cannot seem to find much in the way of review? Also Biblical Foundations of Governement DVD set also by Pratt?

I am looking at a few books to put into a Governement course. I already have Basic American Government and Never Before In History. whcih have some good reviews on amazon- please comment of those if you wish as well.

  16. I agree Julie!!! And there is not a lot out there on hs lanquage period that is easy to acquire, easy to use and sufficient as a course.

My dd took a cc class for spanish this spring semester. As you say one semester of cc spanish can be listed as a year of high school spanish. She loved it but has decided to take year two online at The Potter School.

I know this is an expense, but I think hearing and having a teacher is very helpful in this case.

It also depends on your goals if you want to just be able to say you met the 2 years or the teen really wants to be able to just start to understand/speak it as well. ;)

TPS offers a supplemental hour of just speaking spanish- called conversational spanish. Sadly is does cost extra, but not a lot extra.

  17. below is the wiki piece about national vs regional. It is a valid question- but I do know that the gradautes (the Harris brothers attend PHC) go on to excellent colleges. PHC Moot/debate took several of the top places this past year. I do not think anyone would question the quality of the education, and it is not as easy to get in as it used to be- the standards are there.

I think- but do not know- that the answer lies in perhaps the teacher firing controversy and their decision to keep teaching creation. Maybe that is making regional more difficult. if so, I am okay with that....................

Regionally accredited higher education institutions are predominantly academically oriented, non-profit institutions.[11][12][13] Nationally accredited schools are predominantly for-profit and offer vocational, career or technical programs.[11][12]

Every college has the right to set standards and refuse to accept transfer credits.[14] However, if a student has gone to a nationally accredited school it may be particularly difficult to transfer credits (or even credit for a degree earned) if he or she then applies to a regionally accredited college.[12] A 2005 study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that, in making decisions on credit transfer, about 84 percent of U.S. higher education institutions considered whether the sending institution is accredited, and many had policies stating that they would accept credits only from regionally accredited institutions.[15] About 63 percent of institutions told the GAO that they would accept credit from any regionally accredited institution, but only 14 percent similarly accepted credits from nationally accredited schools.[15] One reason given for regional institutions' reluctance to accept credits from nationally accredited institutions is that national accreditors have less stringent standards for criteria such as faculty qualifications and library resources.[15] Students who are planning to transfer credits from a nationally accredited school to a regionally accredited school are advised to ensure that the regionally accredited school will accept the credits before they enroll.[11][12][14]

In general, the names of U.S. post-secondary institutions and their degree titles do not indicate whether the institution is accredited or the type of accreditation it holds. Rules on this topic vary from state to state. Regulations of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission require that post-secondary institutions in the state of Tennessee must be regionally accredited to use the word "university" in their names, and that a school lacking regional accreditation may not use the word "college" in its name without adding a qualifier such as "career", "vocational", "business", "technical", "art", "Bible", or "Christian". Tennessee rules also specify that only regionally accredited schools can issue "liberal arts" degrees or degree titles such as Associate of Arts or Science and Bachelor of Arts or Science.[16]
