  1. Just got an iphone finally (it's an iphone S5)!!!! I know I'm WAY behind-lol. Anyway, is there any way to set up a password or something so that I am the only one who can answer my phone? (not the kids, etc.) Also, is there any way to log out of Gmail each time after I use it? I can't find this in the manual. THANK YOU so much!
  2. No clue about phones-always had a Tracfone til now! I'm fine with getting an iphone 5s as far as features, but is there any kind of a case I could get to make it look newer or updated like an iphone 7? (see edited comment below!) Is there a kind of case that is considered "cool" or "desirable"? ;) Also getting one for 16 yr old dd, so I'd appreciate input for cases I can get for both of us! ETA: I see there are a lot of "rose gold" case options-is that a fad that has passed, or is it still good? I'm also editing to add-I didn't mean make it look exactly like an iphone 7 in the fact that it would fool someone into thinking it is one-lol! I probably should have written it: what kind of case could at least make an iphone 5s seem not so dated. For a hypothetical example, if "rose gold" is the in thing everyone is doing lately, maybe a rose gold case might make the older iphone seem more "in style", if that makes sense! :) Thanks!!
  3. Literally finished Girl on the Train in ONE day :) Really good! I read The Forgotten Garden-I'll have to try her others, thanks! Thanks for the wonderful recommendations!
  4. I've been sick a long long time and constantly need new reading material. Nothing scary, gory, creepy, disturbing, depressing! Loved Maeve Binchy. Also liked John Grisham. Anything that's a light but good read.
  5. Thanks so much, everyone! I started it and am already on page 88! Can't. Put. It. Down. :) So glad I asked about it!! Thank you!
  6. I read just the first two intro type pages (the short ones, one paragraph long each) and I thought it sounded really creepy, like it's inside a murderer's mind. I don't like that type of thing. I don't mind suspense, however. I've been very ill and could use a good book to read, and was hoping this one would be ok! Would this be an ok read for me? Thanks!
  7. Thanks, Lori! I've been sick AND trying to prep dd for PSAT plus get ds ready for a trip to Washington DC tmorow!! AGH! So this really helped me!!
  8. Thanks, Lori. But do colleges get her PSAT scores? Is there a way to opt out of colleges seeing her PSAT scores? Thanks!
  9. Just coming back to say I'm still sick today...will come back to post hopefully tmrow! So much good info here..hope I am feeling better trmow.... THANK YOU
  10. I'm sitting here overwhelmed with emotion that you all would take the time to think through our situation and write out such helpful guidance. Seriously. That you shared time out of your BUSY lives to help like this just blows me away! THANK YOU! I am brain dead at the moment and sick and tired and going to bed, BUT I'm looking forward to waking up fresh in the morning and reading through these with my notepad and pencil ready! And then I may have follow-up questions :) Please know that you all have made my day today!!!!!
  11. Thanks for the input so far-please keep it coming! So she might get INTO colleges, but we are really counting on scholarship money. Would that be at all possible with what I listed? The college classes at co-op are courses/teachers that were approved for college credit through a local college. This same college also approves college course work at local (mostly Christian and private) high schools. There is a process the teacher has to go through to get their course approved by the college, and the teacher must have certain credentials as well that must be approved by the college.
  12. Dd16 is a good student (high school student), although weak in math. On her practice PSAT tests (at home) her total is about 1120 (I don't even know if that's good or average). She gets all A's in her homeschool co-op classes, where she has had most of her classes the last couple years (so it's not "mommy grades"). She'd do a great college interview and would have excellent letters of recommendation. BUT her classes are nothing spectacular-basically on level. Nothing really counts as Honors level or advanced. And very lame extracurriculars. Certainly no hooks! We have never been able to afford music lessons, etc, and she is not into sports. She wants to go into nursing-hopefully Liberty University or Cedarville or some conservative Christian college. She is a wonderful girl, and loves the Lord and people, and everyone who meets her adores her. But her transcript is going to look terribly lean. :( I feel like such a failure as far as that goes, like I should have been doing more to get her into clubs and so on. I was sick for two years of her high school, culminating in a major surgery out of the country, but that won't matter on her transcript!!!! I'm just getting my head back in the game after the last couple horrible years to try to try to help her pull this all together. Can you please take a look at what she's done (below) and make any recommendations on what to do to beef things up over the rest of this year and next (junior and senior year). I know this year is especially important so colleges can see it. THANK YOU so much-you can't imagine how much we appreciate it! Freshman year was the average courses. Last yr as sophomore she took Geometry (Saxon), Spanish 3, Amer. History, Chemistry (Apologia), Lit (Shakespeare but not Honors), and one semester of Debate. This year it's a homeschool co-op Spanish class that counts as college credit, homeschool co-op English Comp class that counts as college credit, Algebra 2(Saxon), Gileskirk (King's Meadow) History, Physics (Apologia). Extra-curriculars: Sophmore year- -homeschool co-op play -Vacation Bible School helper (one week) -Puppet Ministry (4 wks) Junior year- -VBS helper (one week) -Puppet Ministry (4 wks) -works at library 3 days/wk (3 hours each)
  13. I see she will be asked for info for Student Search information for colleges and that type of thing. I want to make sure to let her know ahead of time if there is any of that she should NOT fill in, for any reason. But I'm having trouble discerning that, not knowing what questions they may ask and for what purpose. Would there be any reason to NOT fill in all personal info they ask for on the PSAT? ie-would we want all her info going to colleges or wherever they send it? (she is 11th grade-first time taking PSAT, or any test of that magnitude!) Thanks!
  14. I thought of these so far so they (5th grade) can learn to draw USA outline from memory by end of year- Start with tracing it w/ tracing paper for awhile Draw it outside in chalk What other creative or even art type activities can you think of to help with this! I am "drawing a blank"-lol. THANKS!
  15. I've never had feet issues before and could wear anything. I've been home for 16 yrs though! Now I'm working part-time on my feet and I definitely need better shoes. My Tevas are working for summer, but I need a winter shoe with arch support, etc., similar to the Tevas. If possible, I don't want to spend much! So please let me know if there are discount places to buy! Thanks so much!
  16. Thank you both for the information! Very helpful indeed, and I appreciate it. I'm leaning toward OO since we're more familiar w/ it and no changing file extensions, etc. Patty Joanna-I thought Office Online was FREE? Do you mean you pay for the Desktop Office subscription?
  17. Thanks for your responses! Lanny-Do you prefer Office Online or Libre, and why? What are the pros/cons of each, would you say? Question about your last sentence ("What I mentioned above...""---1. is the "what I mentioned above" the Office Online or the Libre? I'm guessing the Libre, right? Because wouldn't Office Online automatically be compatible with Microsoft Office? (and if not, what do you mean by "appropriate MS file extension"?) Sorry-I'm super thick when it comes to computer lingo! Also, Lanny-do you know much about GoogleDocs to compare it to Office Online? Asking bcuz you sound knowledgeable about all this :) Patty Joanna-when you say "family subscription", is that free? And yes, I'm kind of thinking we'll all like the Office ONline better than Google, just cuz it's what we're used to.
  18. Thanks, Maize-how do you like the camera on it? Any downsides to this phone that you've discovered so far? Thank you!
  19. Don't know anything about cell phones-I have a small Samsung that I don't use much-don't even have a contract-just fill it with Tracphone minutes. Now I'll be working outside the home and need a better phone. Thought I'd get iPhone or Note until I saw the price!!!!!!!!! We really don't want to put a ton of money into a phone, especially since they change so quickly and we can't afford to keep buying a new one! Is there: 1. a way to get iPhone or Note cheaper (like included in a phone contract from somewhere instead of buying it outright? Or maybe to lease the phone or something?) ---would it be a bad move to get an older version of iPhone or Note? OR 2. a similar nice phone like those, even if it's a step down, that I could look into? I don't need super fancy but I'd like a really good one-good camera, intuitive to use, fast Internet (my Tracphone is soooo slow), etc. THanks so much for any help!
  20. Never owned a computer before that didn't have Microsoft Office; just got a new one so I'm looking for alternatives. I am NOT at all computer savvy. I googled around and saw there is Microsoft Office Online, and also Google Docs. I was SOOOOOO excited to see these are FREE!! Wow!! But is there a catch to it I'm missing? If you're using these, do you like them? Pros/cons vs/ Microsoft Office Desktop? I'd also love to hear your thoughts on Microsoft Office Online vs. Google Docs-not familiar w/ either. This is just for me and my (high school age) kids to use and none of us are computer savvy so we don't need anything fancy. We've never even used Excel. We use Word a lot but just to write reports. They *may* need something like PowerPoint sometimes. Thanks for any help!
  21. YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! That was it! I tried Mozilla and it worked! (Explorer was what wasn't working) Thanks, hornblower, for sticking with me and helping me out with this and not just giving up-I really really appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!!
  22. Abs and nut butters-lol :) Thanks for checking it. It hasn't worked for me for a couple days, so the browser has been closed and reopened. I cleared history -still not working. I don't even have an IG account so I can't sign in.... but I never did before and was always still able to scroll down. Shoot-I can't figure it out and it's driving me crazy!
