  1. Thanks so much for the comments so far-I very much appreciate you sharing your personal thoughts. That is exactly how I feel-I do NOT want my ashes hanging around with my family after I'm gone; I think it may stall or draw out the grieving process for my family, and I don't want to be thought of as the ashes on the dresser or whatever. I certainly don't want to pay for the ashes to be buried, and for me it's an upsetting thought to have the family scatter them somewhere (totally personal opinion here-I know it gives great comfort to some people to have their or their loved ones' ashes spread in a place that's meaningful to them). So I really hope there is a way they can just get rid of the ashes at the crematorium.
  2. After recently losing a close loved one, dh and I are discussing our own plans for the first time. If you've planned a cremation: Is it possible to just be cremated right away, and have the cremation place just dispose of the ashes? Is it cheaper that way than a regular funeral? (no coffin, urn, etc.) For reasons of cost and not wanting anyone to have their last view of me be in a coffin, I'd like to be cremated asap in the cheapest way. I DON'T want my loved ones having my ashes to lug around-lol! And I don't want a burial. Then I just want a church memorial service. I want people to remember how I was in life, and have the church service be a celebration of my life instead of morbid and sad with a body laying there. My dh and kids are in agreement with my wishes (and dh will likely do the same). I just wondered if it's logistically possible? I'd love to hear any comments! Also, if you had a loved one cremated, did it change the grieving process for you (in positive or negative ways)?
  3. Due to homeschooling for 17 years (so far) on one small income, we've never been on vacation since our honeymoon! We'd like to go somewhere nice but not $$$. We literally have no money, but a family member just died suddenly and it's making us feel like life is too short to never have gone on a vacation together. Maybe an all-inclusive? Should we do a package deal? Any ideas are much appreciated! Also, will we be in trouble with weather that time of year if we go tropical? THANK YOU!
  4. Dd has done all the tests in the College Board book. Are there any other official practice tests out there that we can access? She said there are some on Kahn but some of them are duplicates of the ones in the College Board book. And she can't poke around on Kahn to try to tell *which* ones are duplicates because it starts timing you as soon as you access the test. Thanks for any help!
  5. So I want to get some compression stockings to wear around the house. Has anyone used them to prevent them getting worse? Did it help? Mine (lower leg) are wide and visible under the skin but haven't popped out yet. Can you recommend good specific brands, hopefully not too expensive!!!
  6. Thinking of relocating to an area where dh's job is available. He's getting close to retirement and we have NO retirement money so we want to be in good weather w/ cheap cost of living. We'd be coming from upstate NY where our house is worth about $250,000 (we owe 80,000). We want to get in a one story small but newer home (less than 10 years), or even a condo, in a suburb, and have no or very low mortgage, if possible. We are hoping for lower taxes and general cost of living so we can get by once he retires. I do know there is no state income tax-does that make a ton of difference over the long run? Can you give me some pros/cons about the Nashville area, please? I'd appreciate it! Would also love to hear some specific suburbs that are really nice to live in but not too $$$. Thanks! Our older daughter is still homeschooling, but almost done. Ds 8th grade is in private Christian school (not Catholic)-are there any good ones in the Nashville area that are not expensive?
  7. He's a really good kid-responsible and respectful and a great work ethic and extremely motivated to make money :) He is at the age this year where he really NEEDS to keep busy all summer. He's too old to just "play outside" all day like previous summers-he would get bored. He is an over-thinker (in a bad way) if he's bored so I need to keep him busy. He suffered a concussion which he still has some minor effects from (he is cleared for most activities though), and he has some concussion-based depression and keeping busy helps a lot with that. I specifically want to figure out some kind of job or jobs he can do. Volunteering is ok, and he does that, but is there anything a kid that age can do to make money? He isn't afraid of hard work and will do any job. I have a few things he can do for work for me but we can't afford to pay him much. We also think it would be a great experience for him to work for other people. I'd appreciate any ideas! Thanks!
  8. Thanks so much! I'm thinking we may just do something low key like flashcards on Quizlet or whatever-anyone done this and was it effective?
  9. Wondering if Apologia Advanced Bio has enough for our purposes or if we should add to it? Dd17 would like a pretty thorough Greek/Latin medical root study for next year. Thanks!
  10. Not sure if I should advise dd to do the essay on the SAT-May will be her first time taking SAT. She is a junior and got 1290 on the PSAT in October-720 on English (I think only got 3 wrong) and 570 on math. Liberty University for nursing is top choice college, but we want to make sure all our bases are covered in case she changes her mind. She is a strong writer but hasn't had to write much under pressure. What should we do in this case? What did you do, and why? What are the pros/cons of the essay? My biggest question is: Does it count against her score if she does the essay and doesn't do well? I'm hoping we have nothing to lose by doing it, and everything to gain? I know I could google for some answers, but honestly, I'm getting so overwhelmed by all the info out there and I'm trying to keep it simple due to health reasons. And I've been on these boards (and the old ones) since dd was four years old-THIRTEEN YEARS!!, so I trust you! :)
  11. Heather, those are GREAT tips about Liberty-I never would have known those things! Thank you! I am really shocked about the conservative thing-I had no idea-I assumed the kids would be conservative-my dd is very conservative. (Would it be worth it to get her into a quad w/ a kitchen and have her make her own food? And what did you end up doing about a car for your dd junior year-would Uber work for us, or is it $$$? I don't know much about Uber-lol)
  12. Fourisenough mentioned doing an A+P prep course senior year to prep for nursing college, which I hadn't thought of! That made me wonder what else we could be doing to prep, whether it be school subjects, extracurriculars, etc. And would pre-calc be the math we want after Algebra 2 to prep for nursing? (she is not super strong in math) Or something else? Any online high school or college courses (or dual enrollment) that would be helpful? THANK YOU! This is our first rodeo with college, so it's a little nerve-wracking! :)
  13. I don't see A+P for high school on Apologia's site. Is it Advanced Biology? http://www.apologia.com/180-advanced-biology Fourisenough-I'd love any other recommendations for senior high school year for good prep for future nursing major. What math? Any other helpful school subjects she should take (online or whatever!) What about extracurriculars or ANYTHING else you think would be helpful? -Also, did your dd do the Apologia A+P at home, online or in co-op? Pros/cons? Would it be ok for a responsible, mature senior who has had three years of Apologia to do totally independently at home? Are the labs doable easily at home? THANK YOU so much for any tips! Thanks for the rec for giving her a leg up for college A+P! Wouldn't have thought of that!
  14. She did well in Apologia and liked it. (She is finishing Algebra 2 this year-Saxon. Math is not her best subject. She'll prbly do Pre-Calc next year for math.) What should we do for science for 12th grade? I thought about having her do an online college course, but will science be hard to do online (ie-labs, etc)? I also don't want her to get turned off science by taking an online science course, since she'll need to enjoy it for nursing. Any recommendations for GOOD (engaging) online science courses or other 12th grade science suggestions? Thanks!
  15. I'm ok now :) Thought I missed the SAT deadline but I see there is more than one test date in spring.
  16. Dd wants to go into nursing, probably at Liberty but it depends on aid. We think we'll have her do some Liberty Online courses for senior year. (not nursing specific, just general stuff) What did you like/not like about Liberty Online for senior year? Some random questions: Does it affect freshman status for need aid at all? Are the courses hard? Any we should stay away from? Was it hard to do a science or math course online? We'd love any comments or tips-thanks!
  17. Dd really wants to go to Liberty, but we think we'll apply at about six schools to see how aid is at each. So we added Cedarville to the list. What others are there? We're at the beginning of our college journey, so I really have no clue! Thanks!
  18. About to pull the trigger and get one on Amazon, but thought I'd check first if anyone had seen them at any of those stores? Basically, I'm wondering if those stores even sell them. If so, any clue at all how much they were? (Preferably King size, but whatever!) THANKS!
  19. Thanks so much, everyone! I actually got the Dummies book, but even funnier, I got the "Iphone for SENIORS for Dummies" bcuz that was all my library had-lol! I did the Touch ID, and it's a great tip about Do Not Disturb-thank you to everyone!
  20. My daughter and I were talking about this, and we wanted a bigger "sample size" so I thought I'd ask here!! :) Thanks for your opinion!
